L'état de nature n'est pas, comme on l'a dit quelquefois, l'état où se trouve l'homme avant l'institution des sociétés. Une telle expression ferait croire, en effet, qu'il s'agit d'une époque historique, par laquelle aurait réellement commencé le développement humain. Telle n'est pas la pensée de Rousseau. C'est de ces derniers et d'eux seuls qu'est fait l'homme à l'état de nature. Le moyen de le déterminer « tel qu'il a dû sortir des mains de la nature» est de le dépouiller « de tous les dons surnaturels qu'il a pu recevoir et de toutes les facultés artificielles qu'il n'a pu acquérir que par un long progrès » (ibid. et 1re partie). Si pour Rousseau, comme d'ailleurs pour Montesquieu et presque tous les penseurs jusqu'à Comte (et encore Spencer retombe-t-il dans la confusion traditionnelle) la nature finit à l'individu, tout ce qui est au delà lie peut être qu'artificiel. Quant à savoir si l'homme est resté un temps durable dans cette situation, ou s'il a commencé à s'en écarter dès qu'il a commencé à être, c'est une question que Rousseau n'examine pas, car elle n'importe pas à son entreprise.

Si celle-ci avait été bien « réalisée » à Paris et à Londres, les alliés auraient organisé au plus vite l'expédition Salonique-Vienne-Prague-Berlin qui, en outre, était l'opération la plus propre à mettre fin à la pression allemande sur le front occidental, comme on finira bien par s'en persuader.
