Mount Rainier began its history as an incorporated town in1910, with the merging of several subdivisions that straddledBunker Hill Road, a major route between the ports of Georgetownand Bladensburg. Before the Civil War, Thomas and Anna Clemsonowned a 100-acre farm that fronted on that important road. Theirfamily letters provide some of the earliest writings about the area. In1891, Elizabeth and Estcourt Sawyer purchased the Clemson farmand named their subdivision Mount Rainier. In 1899, the real estatebecame especially attractive to commuters when the District ofColumbia s streetcar system was extended through the heart of thepresent-day city; that route, now known as Rhode Island Avenue, laterbecame part of US Route 1."

Prior to its formation in 1849, Watauga County was a hunting ground for the Cherokee and part of the trail blazed by frontiersman Daniel Boone, for whom the county seat was later named. Primarily settled by whites after the Revolutionary War, many of the county s earliest families came to the Appalachians from the Piedmont region of North Carolina and, prior to that, from the North New England, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia. These settlers were mainly of European extraction English, German, Scottish, Irish, Swiss, and Welsh along with a smaller African representation. Nestled in the panoramic Blue Ridge Mountains and unimagined by its early agrarian inhabitants, Watauga would become one of North Carolina s premier tourist destinations and home to Appalachian State University."

Farmingdale, located in west-central Long Island on both sides of the Nassau-Suffolk County border, was an important center of airplane manufacturing from the First World War until almost the end of the Cold War. Aviation pioneers like Lawrence Sperry, Sherman Fairchild, Leroy Grumman, Alexander de Seversky, and Alexander Kartveli directed the manufacture of aircraft, aircraft engines, and key subassemblies as they evolved from the propeller, biplane era to the jet and space age. Farmingdale witnessed the creation of such cutting-edge aircraft as the Sperry Triplane Amphibian and Messenger; the Fairchild FC-2; the Grumman FF-1, JF-1 Duck, and G-22 Gulfhawk; the Seversky P-35; the Republic Aviation P-47, F-84, and F-105; and the Fairchild Republic space shuttle tails and A-10 Warthog. Airplane manufacturing in Farmingdale ended in 1987 with the demise of Fairchild Republic, but this book offers a comprehensive pictorial history of the outstanding achievements of so many talented men and women over seven decades.

Die Schulchronik Stakendorfs wurde 1882 begonnen und durch die jeweiligen Lehrer bis 1953 fortgeführt. Sie wurde in der Sütterlin-schrift geschrieben. Die heute kaum verwendete Schrift wurde übersetzt und steht damit jetzt allen in lesbarer Form zur Verfügung.Ergänzt wird die Schulchronik durch kleine Geschichten aus Stakendorf und der Umgebung.

Das "Kriegstagebuch der Volksschule Nieder-Florstadt" - geführt von November 1940 bis zum Oktober 1944 durch den Schulrektor Heinrich Rühl - ist ein einzigartiges Zeitdokument für die Mobilisierung der Zivilbevölkerung während des Zweiten Weltkrieges: Parteiversammlungen werden organisiert, Durchhalteparolen gefeiert, Frontnachrichten propagandistisch weitergetragen. Gleichzeitig spiegelt sich im weiteren Verlaufe des Krieges mehr und mehr die Kehrseite von Hitlers Angriffskrieg ab: Der Schulunterricht muss zugunsten von Ernteeinsätzen ausfallen, die Bombardements treffen nicht mehr nur Frankfurt, sondern auch die Dorfbevölkerung, akribisch notierte Todesnachrichten von der Front werden zum ständigen Begleiter der Tagebucheintragungen. 1945 folgt der unausweichliche Zusammenbruch, hier authentisch und in wichtigen Details berichtet durch einen Augenzeugen. Neben dem "Kriegstagebuch" sowie umfangreichem Register bietet der Band von Dieter Alt die Toten- und Vermisstenliste des Volksbundes Deutscher Kriegsgräberfürsorge wie auch einen Abgleich mit der örtlichen Kirchenchronik. Einschlägige Quellenhinweise, Forschungstipps und Literaturempfehlungen zeigen dem geschichtswissenschaftlichen Laien vielfältige Ansatzpunkte für eine selbstständige Recherche - entweder aus lokalhistorischem Interesse oder zur Aufarbeitung der eigenen Familiengeschichte. Dieses wird umso dringender, als immer weniger aus der Altersgruppe, die die Zeit des Nationalsozialismus und des Zweiten Weltkrieges erlebt hatte, aus eigenem Munde werden berichten können. Gerade das Geschehen abseits des bereits lange Erforschten muss einer jüngeren Generation zur Erinnerung gesichert und zugänglich gemacht werden. Dazu leistet dieses Buch einen wichtigen Beitrag.

Der Vierwaldstättersee liegt malerisch eingebettet zwischen den vier Kantonen Uri, Schwyz , Nidwalden und Luzern in der Zentralschweiz. Der See ist in der letzten Eiszeit vor 12 000 Jahren aus dem Reussgletscher entstanden; die Reuss bildet auch heute noch den Zufluss aus dem Gotthardmassiv. Der Vierwaldstättersee wurde in der letzten Eiszeit vom Reussgletscher geformt. Der See selbst bildete sich als Gletscherrandsee am Ende der Eiszeit vor rund 12'000 Jahren.Luzern gehört zu den schönsten Städten der Welt. Das Wahrzeichen und eine Besonderheit der Stadt ist die 204 Meter lange Kapellbrücke. Der Luzerner Hausberg Pilatus ist einer der sagenumworbensten Orte der Region Luzern ¿ Vierwaldstättersee und die steilste Zahnradbahn der Welt führt auf den Gipfel. An klaren Tagen bietet er ein Panorama mit 73 Alpengipfeln.Weiter Anlaufpunkte sind Stans, Stansstad, Küssnacht, Weggis, Einsiedeln mit den Schwingerwettkämpfen, Beckenried, Altdorf sowie die Schaukäserei Kloster Engelberg.

Im ersten Hauptteil wird die Geschichte der ¿Basberger Häuser¿ erzählt. Erzählt wird die Geschichte der Hoferben und deren Familien. In früheren Zeiten war es durchaus üblich, dass nicht nur der Hoferbe, sondern auch Geschwister mit ihren Familien auf dem Hof lebten. Heute stehen 38 Wohnhäuser, eine zu einem Wohnhaus umgebaute Schule, eine Kapelle und ein Gemeindehaus im Ort.Im zweiten Hauptteil ¿Basberger Familien¿ werden Familien in alphabetischer Reihenfolge aufgeführt. Der Zeitraum umfasst hauptsächlich die Jahre ab ca. 1630 bis 2016. Erste Erwähnungen beginnen um das Jahr 1600. Erwähnt werden 455 Familien.
