The project began in Amboy, California, where Guelpa is carrying out the initial stages of the project. After several stages on glaciers, MATZA expanded its scope to urban contexts such as Meyrin and Lausanne in Switzerland, as well as international metropolises like Medellín and Cúcuta in Colombia. In partnership with the Edgelands Institute, MATZA has been looking at the complex dynamics of urban centers since 2022, now exploring the implications of digitization and security on the social contract between city dwellers.The book THE DESERT, THE GLACIER AND THE SUPERSTRUCTURE retraces in images the three major stages of the project carried out between the Mojave Desert in the USA, the Aletsch Glacier in the Swiss Alps and three urban construction sites between 2014 and 2021. The book places great emphasis on the images, whose graphic treatment and choice of paper on which they are printed are adapted to each stage. The three parts of the book are each accompanied by a text by Guelpa and punctuated by contributions from curators, experts and critics who have accompanied the artist throughout his work. Anfang 2014 schenkte mir mein Vater eine Polaroid-Kamera, die schon seit Jahren ungenutzt in seinem Büro herumlag und eigentlich weggeworfen werden sollte. Die Polaroid Macro 5 war ursprünglich für die Zahn- und Tatortfotografie gedacht, aber meine eigene Verwendung für das klobige Gerät war zunächst unklar. Im Laufe der nächsten Monate kristallisierte sich durch Experimentieren und Ausprobieren nach und nach eine mögliche Verwendung heraus. Die Kamera erwies sich schnell als fähig, ein Gefühl einzufangen, das in einigen meiner (damals) früheren Bilder vorhanden war, die ich am meisten mochte, die ich aber nicht ohne weiteres nachstellen konnte. Die früheren Bilder hielten gewöhnliche Materialien oder Motive fest, aber die Bilder wirkten schwer fassbar und abstrakt - verwandelt durch die Inszenierung, den Rahmen und den Prozess des Fotografierens.

Rein Logisches Denken versucht die Welt zu entmystifizieren. Weisheit kommt von Wissen; es ist ein anderes Wissen als das des Weltbildwissens. Es ist ein Wissen in Erfahrung gebettet, in Fühlen und Empfinden. So können Geheimnisse nur auf der Ebene der Geheimnisse vermittelt werden. Der Tod, die Geburt sind ein Geheimnis. Eine Weisheit ist ein Geheimnis, ein Mysterium, eine Rune, ein Raunen, wie ein Rascheln bei der Zitterpappel.In seinen Bildern macht der Fotograf Michael Knorr mit uns eine Reise in eigene innerseelische Bereiche. Er will unsere inneren Mysterien berühren, mit Geschichten von Daphne, der Nixe Echo oder Tisiphone, der Rachegöttin.Seine geheimnisvollen Bilder sind ästhetisch schön, gleichzeitig haben sie auch etwas Angstauslösendes.

Matthias Leupold erinnert sich in seinen szenischen Fotografien an seine Ost-Berliner Kindheit und Jugend in den sechziger bis achtziger Jahren unter den Bedingungen der Diktatur in der DDR und stellt die Kamera »in den toten Winkel jener Epoche«, wie Karl Corino seine Arbeitsweise 1995 treffend beschrieb.Das Tragen von Uniformen - die der Pioniere, der Freien Deutschen Jugend, der paramili­tärischen Gesellschaft für Sport und Technik und schließlich der Nationalen Volksarmee - war für Leupolds Generation eine Selbstverständlichkeit. Die DDR-Nomenklatura versuchte durch die Kinder- und Jugendorganisationen sowie durch ständige Propaganda von Beginn an das Denken und Handeln ihrer jungen Bürger zu prägen.Der »Titel Aus dem Gruppenbuch der Christiane P.« spielt u.a. auf das Aufgehen des Indi­viduums in der Gruppe an. Wer sich nicht unterordnete, wurde vom System ausgespien: sei es die fallengelassene Goldmedaillengewinnerin oder sei es Matthias Leupold selbst, der 1982 wegen Nichtanzeige der Republikflucht eines Freundes in der Zentralen Untersuchungshaftanstalt des Ministeriums für Staatssicherheit der DDR in Hohenschönhausen einsaß. Mittels komplexer fotografischer Experimente in der Dunkelkammer untersucht Marta Djourina (geb. 1991 in Sofia, Bulgarien; lebt und arbeitet in Berlin) das Wesen des Lichts und die Wechselwirkungen zwischen Sinneswahrnehmungen, Naturphänomenen, Körper und Information. So hat sie ein hybrides Genre entwickelt, das sie als "Filtergramm" oder auch "Blindmalerei" bezeichnet. Das Dorf wurde von drei Fotografen einer Familie über 70 Jahre - zwischen 1950 und 2022 - fotografisch begleitet. Es handelt sich um ein ungewöhnliches, mehreren Zufällen geschuldetes Projekt, das viel erzählt über dieses Land, das Dorf, seine Menschen und wie sich die Dinge so entwickelt haben.Zufall: Der Müllermeister von Berka, Ludwig Schirmer ist begeisterter Amateurfotograf, der nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg neben der Arbeit als Müller noch Zeit findet das Leben im Dorf und auf dem Feld in Bilder zu fassen, die an andere große deutsche Fotografen seiner Zeit erinnern. Zufall: Die Familie Schirmer bekommt 1950 eine Tochter, Ute, die ihre Kindheit in Berka verbringt.Zufall: Ute heiratet 1973 Werner, den sie am Gymnasium in Oranienburg kennenlernt. Beide studieren später an der HGB Leipzig und Werner macht 1977/78 sein Diplom über Utes Heimatdorf, Berka. Zufall: Werner bekommt 1997 einen Auftrag vom STERN, die von Helmut Kohl versprochenen "Blühenden Landschaften" zu fotografieren und geht 1998 noch einmal nach Berka zum Fotografieren. 2001 stirbt Ludwig Schirmer, der in den sechziger Jahren zu einem der bekanntesten Werbefotografen der DDR geworden war und in seinem Nachlass tauchen zufällig einige wenige Abzüge und viele Negative seiner Berka-Bilder auf. Ute Mahler und Werner Mahler machen in ihrer Dunkelkammer erste Abzüge und ihnen wird klar welche künstlerische und dokumentarische Qualität diese Bilder haben. 2021/2022, kein Zufall mehr: Ute Mahler fährt wiederholt nach Berka und portraitiert die Jugendlichen des Dorfes, die noch nicht einmal geboren waren, als Werner Mahler das letzte mal dort fotografierte. Es sind die Ur- oder Ururenkelinnen der Menschen, die Ludwig Schirmer in den fünfziger Jahren kannte und portraitierte.2022/2023, das vollkommen analog und schwarzweiss fotografierte Langzeitprojekt ist abgeschlossen und die Idee des Buches, die schon einige Jahre gereift ist, nimmt erste Formen an. Die Schriftstellerin Jenny Erpenbeck, die Journalistin und Freundin Anja Maier, der Soziologe Steffen Mau (Humboldt Universität Berlin) und der amerikanische Fotohistoriker Gary Van Zante (MIT, Boston) beschreiben den Ort, die Zeit, die Menschen, die Fotografen und Fotografien.
