My original intention in writing this book was to consider evolving mar ket systems and Hayekian criteria of efficiency (see von Hayek (1931, 1945) ), and to discover those formal structures which might possibly lie at the base of economic systems capable of evolution.

They especially deal with the case of limited-dependent variable models where some exogenous variables are either measured on an interval scale or a nominal scale. Zimmermann investigates methods to summarize the predictive quality of models that deal with discrete alternatives.

It is really no longer necessary to stress the importance of availing of sound statistical information on the environment. The book is based on work originating within the framework of an international forum for exchange of ideas and co-operation between researchers, planners and practitioners, The Consortium for the Study of Perceived Planning Issues in Marginal Areas -PIMA.

My main interest here is not primarily to understand these exogenous forces, but to develop a theory of how the process of firms' innovative activity is shaped by competition and in turn shapes future competition between firms in an industry.
