Unter Rückgriff auf den gouvernementalitätstheoretischen Ansatz Michel Foucaults wird der Debattierwettbewerb Jugend debattiert einer macht- und herrschaftskritischen Analyse unterzogen. Forschungsleitend ist dafür die Einordnung in die aktuelle, neoliberale Lösungen anbietende Bildungs(reform)politik, die über den Diskurs des Kompetenzlernens in einer lebenslang lernenden Gesellschaft beispielhaft zugänglich gemacht wird. Ausgehend von diesem Bezugspunkt wird in der fallspezifischen Gouvernementalitätsanalyse der Frage nachgegangen, ob und inwieweit Jugend debattiert in diese Kunst des Regiertwerdens eingeordnet werden kann.
«Nathanael ist wahnsinnig», «Nathanael leidet an Realitätsverkennung» ¿ solche Urteile und Diagnosen bestimmen grundlegend die Rezeption des legendären wie rätselhaften Textes Der Sandmann von E. T. A. Hoffmann. Sich dagegen zu wenden ist ein wesentlicher Antrieb dieser diskurskritischen Interpretation. Sie greift dabei in origineller Weise auf Texte der Psychiatrie- und Psychoanalysekritik, insbesondere auf den Anti-Ödipus von Gilles Deleuze und Felix Guattari, zurück. Der Autor entwickelt in dieser Studie eine umfassende und detaillierte Analyse des Sandmanns, untersucht das Verhältnis von Körper und Sprache und kommt dabei zu einem überraschenden Ergebnis: die Beziehungen der Personen der Erzählung sind zutiefst von der Struktur des Mißbrauchs geprägt.
Die Verspottung christlicher Glaubensdogmen und christlicher Kreuzzugsideologie, so wie sie im Morgante des florentinischen Dichters Luigi Pulci (1432-1484) besonders deutlich zum Ausdruck kommt, steht in schärfstem Widerspruch zu unseren klischeehaften Vorstellungen über die Religiosität des «mittelalterlichen Menschen». Daß es keinen Sinn macht, ein bereits zu Lebzeiten seines Verfassers dringend nachgefragtes und tausendfach gedrucktes Werk in seinen bemerkenswertesten Aussagen fortgesetzten Relativierungsbemühungen zu unterziehen und an Stellen, wo dies nicht gelingen will, auf den Autor kurzerhand das atypische Sonderbewußtsein eines Außenseiters oder Geächteten zu projizieren, wird hier durch textnahe Analysen und unter kontinuierlichem Abgleich mit Pulcis dichterischen Vorlagen vor Augen geführt. Grundliegende These ist, daß der Morgante als wichtiger Indikator für die Existenz breiter Bevölkerungsschichten zu betrachten ist, die bereits im 15. Jahrhundert gegen eine ideologisch und institutionell krisenhaften Belastungsproben ausgesetzten Kirche ein gutes Stück Aufklärung durchgesetzt haben.
Bisher waren alle neueren Editionen der Poetik des Vida auf die autorisierten Editionen gestützt; die cremonische aus dem Jahre 1550 (C) oder die römische aus dem Jahre 1527 (R). Man hat niemals die von Vida nicht autorisierte Pariser Edition (P) vom Juli des Jahres 1527 berücksichtigt. Hingegen wurde die Version der im Kodex des Venturi (V) erhaltenen Poetik, der eine Kopie des in Bruchstücken erhaltenen Kodexes des Vernazza (T) ist, von Williams veröffentlicht, aber er vergleicht nicht jene Version mit der aus den späteren Editionen (CRP). Außerdem hat man bisher die Zitate des Tiraboschi (H) aus dem Kodex des Vernazza (T) nicht berücksichtigt. So hat der Leser keine Möglichkeit gehabt, die Änderungen im Werk zu verfolgen, von der ältesten Version der Poetik (V) an ¿ durch die Version, die die Pariser Edition (P) repräsentiert ¿ bis zu den autorisierten Editionen des Werkes (CR). In dieser Edition der Poetik wurden zum ersten Mal vier Versionen des Werkes zusammengestellt. Die Basis der Edition ist der Text der cremonischen Edition aus dem Jahre 1550 (C), der letzten Version der Poetik, die von Vida autorisiert wurde. Diese Edition enthält similia zu den Zitaten aus den Werken von Autoren der Antike, des Mittelalters und aus der Zeit der Renaissance, deren Werke Vida nutzen konnte.
Image, Text and Audience is the first book dealing with paintings related to Taishokan, the most popular ballad-drama of the 16th century. Key narrative elements in the story include the transmission of a magic jewel from China to Japan and the succession of the Fujiwara family. The narrative provided motifs for historical accounts, Buddhist proselytising texts, a nô play, puppet theatre plays, and satirical novels of the 18th century. This lavishly illustrated book is of interest to scholars of various disciplines including art history, literature, and religious studies. It offers the first annotated translation of the 1632 printed edition of the Taishokan and analyses painted versions on screens, scrolls, fans and manuscripts based on critical concepts and methodologies. The importance of the painting medium in shaping the visual content of each work is a pivotal aspect discussed in the book, along with questions of patronage, reception and gender.
The twentieth century may be said to have been the century of ecumenism, a striving worldwide to realize church unity at different levels. It has frequently been asserted that one condition for reaching visible Church unity is that there should be basic agreement on baptism, eucharist and ministry. These three topics are dealt with in the Lima-document or BEM (1982). In the present study the sections of the latter that concern baptism are analyzed and also contextualized through a closer study of one of the responses to BEM, the official response of the Baptist Union of Sweden. This response gives a more traditional, closed Baptist opinion: baptism cannot be the basis of the church unity sought by BEM. The author shows here, however, that fundamental Baptist principles are being reconsidered, indicating considerable diversity within the Baptist Union concerning these questions. On the local level there are many ecumenical strivings, concretized in ecumenical congregations where different theologies and practices meet. This has opened up possibilities of church unity on the basis of both types of baptism (infant baptism and believers¿ baptism), and also membership on the basis of faith alone. By comparing official documents with public expressions of unofficial opinion, this study shows that the reality is more complex and ambiguous than is apparent in official documents. This book could be of interest because of its application of new methods to the study of »reception». To help an international readership, a historical presentation of the Baptist Union of Sweden introduces this study.

John Henry Newman (1801-1890), however, beatified by Pope Benedict XVI in September 2010, was no ordinary churchman. This book seeks to settle the historical question of Newman as anti-liberal or liberal, and to shed theological light on his liberal spirit and anti-liberal discourse, in order to provide fresh insights into the issue of religious pluralism. In particular, the author examines Newman's perception of the danger of the liberal spirit of his time and his possession of another kind of liberal spirit that made him so original, bold and prophetic.
This study explores a number of early modern comedias that deal with historical siege or military episodes in the history of the Iberian peoples. Cervantes's La Numancia, Lope de Vega's El asalto de Mastrique and his lesser known La nueva victoria de don Gonzalo de Cordoba, Calderon de la Barca's El sitio de Breda, and Velez de Guevara's El Hercules de Ocana are key texts examined here. Taking the distinction between history and fiction in Neo-Aristotelian literary theory as a point of departure, this book considers the intellectual and historical conditions that affect the ways in which early modern dramatists interpret historical events according to their own literary and ideological purposes. The interplay of history and fiction demonstrates uses and discontents of legitimizing fiction in the early modern period. Parallel themes of epic and siege intermingled with romance and carnivalesque humour, provide alternative perspectives to early modern representations of empire and war on the Spanish stage.
