Academic texts present subject-specific ideas within a subject-independent framework. This book accounts for the presence of academic words in academic writing by exploring recurring patterns of function in texts representing different subject areas. The book presents a framework which describes academic word use at the ideational, textual and interpersonal levels. Functional categories are presented and illustrated which explain the role of academic words alongside general purpose and technical terms. The author examines biomedical research articles, and journal articles from arts, commerce and law. A comparable analysis focuses on university textbook chapters. Case studies investigate patterns of functionality within the main sections of research articles, compare word use in academic and non-academic texts reporting on the same research, and explore the carrier word function of academic vocabulary. The study concludes by looking at historical and contemporary processes which have shaped the presence of academic vocabulary in the English lexicon.

Kommunikative Handlungen basieren in weiten Teilen auf Musterwissen über Textgestaltung und Formulierungskonventionen. Dies betrifft die Kommunikation in fachlichen Domänen in besonderer Weise. Bei der Beobachtung, Analyse und Deutung rekurrenter Elemente in Texten zeichnen sich jedoch auch Divergenzen ab, wie dieses Musterwissen einzelsprachlich umgesetzt wird. Dies wirft die Frage nach dem systematischen Nachweis solcher Schwerpunktsetzungen auf. Dieser Band stellt Ergebnisse aus Forschungsprojekten vor, die in Zusammenarbeit der Universitäten Bergamo ¿ Florenz ¿ Modena (PRIN-Projekt 2005) sowie der Freien Universität Bozen mit der Europäischen Akademie Bozen durchgeführt wurden. Gegenstand der Untersuchungen sind zum einen theoretische und methodische Fragen der korpusgestützten Analyse fachlicher Texte, zum anderen Merkmale von sozialwissenschaftlichen Aufsätzen und Vorträgen sowie von Gebrauchstexten aus Sprachbereichen, die spezifische Schnittstellen der Kommunikation von Experten und Laien betreffen und die in einem umfassenden deutsch-italienischen Korpus verwaltet werden. Ein Schwerpunkt der Studien liegt auf Fragen der kulturspezifischen Differenz von Formulierungsmustern, die bei wissenschaftlichen Schreibprozessen und Textherstellungsverfahren im Deutschen und Italienischen zum Tragen kommen, und die aus funktional-pragmatischer Perspektive erörtert werden.

Cette étude examine la relation que différentes personnes entretiennent avec l¿écrit, en montrant dans quelles circonstances ces dernières lisent et écrivent, avec quelle adéquation elles le font ainsi que la façon dont elles se représentent le rôle de l¿écrit dans leur vie. Par le biais de sept entretiens semi-directifs et dans une approche à la fois psychologique, sociologique et ethnographique, elle tente de répondre aux questions suivantes : Quelles sont les ressources scripturales dont un individu a besoin pour fonctionner aisément dans une société lettrée ? Peut-il facilement développer ses compétences une fois la scolarité terminée ? D¿où viennent les représentations de l¿écrit ? Quels sont les écrits valorisés dans notre société ? Et finalement, quel est le rôle du multilinguisme dans la compétence scripturale et les représentations de l¿écrit ? L¿analyse des données a conduit à une théorisation de la compétence scripturale définie comme l¿accès à un répertoire de genres dont la maîtrise nécessite des connaissances linguistiques sur le système graphique du français, mais aussi des connaissances socio-pragmatiques sur l¿usage de ces genres. Dans un chapitre de synthèse, l¿auteure identifie une série de paramètres qui permettent de définir plus précisément les aptitudes requises pour chaque genre et les obstacles à cette maîtrise. Finalement la conclusion met en évidence l¿interaction entre besoins, obstacles et développement de la compétence scripturale.

La complejidad y diversidad de los actuales contextos multilingües se refleja en este volumen donde, desde diversas disciplinas y metodologías mixtas, los investigadores e investigadoras se centran en aquellos aspectos de la formación de mediadores y docentes de lenguas extranjeras que son susceptibles de potenciar al máximo el desarrollo de competencias comunicativas e interculturales. Estas, en combinación con un adecuado nivel de competencia digital docente, forman el bagaje imprescindible para que la participación de estos agentes bilingües o multilingües sea de impacto en sociedades con un alto grado de globalización.

Cette étude aborde les usages du participe présent et du gérondif dans la presse française contemporaine. Une mise au point préalable dresse un état des lieux des principaux travaux théoriques concernant la distinction entre ces deux modes, en partant des grammaires générales pour passer aux études axées sur le système verbal et en arriver aux analyses spécifiques abordant le participe présent et/ou le gérondif. Suit une description des cas de figure relatifs au participe présent d¿un côté et au gérondif de l¿autre, illustrés par les résultats d¿une recherche menée sur un corpus journalistique. Ce travail vise à appréhender ces deux modes verbaux dans une perspective qui, partant de la prise en compte de l¿occurrence ponctuelle et de sa configuration intraphrastrique, se veut destinée à une mesure transphrastique voire textuelle. Les nombreux exemples recensés pour chaque catégorie isolée offrent un vaste matériel authentique qui peut servir de base pour comprendre et comparer les divers emplois, que ce soit de la part de spécialistes ou de la part d¿enseignants ou d¿étudiants aux prises avec les multiples manifestations des formes en ¿ant.
