Who was Tertullian, and what can we know about him? This work explores his social identities, focusing on his North African milieu. Theories from the discipline of social/cultural anthropology, including kinship, class and ethnicity, are accommodated and applied to selections of Tertullian's writings. In light of postcolonial concerns, this study utilizes the categories of Roman colonizers, indigenous Africans and new elites. The third category, new elites, is actually intended to destabilize the other two, denying any "e;essential"e; Roman or African identity. Thereafter, samples from Tertullian's writings serve to illustrate comparisons of his own identities and the identities of his rhetorical opponents. The overall study finds Tertullian's identities to be manifold, complex and discursive. Additionally, his writings are understood to reflect antagonism toward Romans, including Christian Romans (which is significant for his so-called Montanism), and Romanized Africans. While Tertullian accommodates much from Graeco-Roman literature, laws and customs, he nevertheless retains a strongly stated non-Roman-ness and an African-ity, which is highlighted in the present monograph.

Welche Bedeutung kam dem biographischen Wissenssegment im Kontext der Bildungskultur des 2. Jh. n. Chr. zu? Welche Formen wurden von zeitgenossischen Autoren zur literarischen Prasentation von Personen gewahlt? Unter dieser doppelten Leitfrage werden hier Personendarstellungen in den Briefen des jungeren Plinius, dem Miszellanwerk des Gellius und den Kaiserbiographien Suetons in einer gattungsubergreifend angelegten Perspektive untersucht. Zu den Gemeinsamkeiten, die sich auf diese Weise beobachten lassen, gehoren das normative Potential historischer Figuren, die Kommemoration von Zeitgenossen und die Interaktion mit den kommunikativen Rahmenbedingungen der romischen Kaiserzeit. Eine solche funktionsgeschichtliche Betrachtungsweise zeigt ferner, dass es sich bei vielen der Charakteristika der untersuchten Autoren, die bislang als Abweichungen von der jeweiligen Gattungstradition kritisiert wurden, um bewusste Entwicklungen handelt, die eng auf ihren gemeinsamen gesellschaftlichen und kulturellen Kontext bezogen sind.

During the VII-VIII centuries Byzantine historiography is supposed to have remained silent, since no source dating to that period has come down to us. West Syriac historiography is believed to have been quite scanty as well because, according to Lawrence Conrad's theory, the only source that later Syriac chroniclers had for this period was Theophilos of Edessa, whose chronicle is commonly thought to be Theophanes' "oriental source" as well. A thourough study of the materials shared by Theophanes (IX cent.), Michael the Syrian (XII cent.), the anonymous chronicler of 1234 (XII-XIII cent.) and Agapius of Mabbug (X cent.) has led the author of this book to reconsider the theory of the "circuit of Theophilos of Edessa" and to look with new eyes at the whole question of the writing of history in Greek, Syriac and Arabic during the first two centuries after the Islamic conquests.The present work delves into this conspicuous case of "intercultural transmission" with the aim of finding some tentative answers to the unspoken questions due to our scarce knowledge of historiography in such a crucial period: who kept memory of what, why, for whom? in which forms were records produced, preserved and transmitted? how did religious issues influence this practice and how did these materials cross denominational borders?

Die Studie wählt einen neuen Forschungsansatz, der von der Prämisse ausgeht, dass es sich in der Periegese des Pausanias um kaschiertes Städtelob (beziehungsweise Städtetadel) handelt. Die Autorin weist zur Begründung auf eine gezielte ¿Verrätselung¿ der Periegese hin, die sie vor allem aus dem gattungsuntypischen Anfang und Schluss des Werks ableitet. Zentrales Kriterium der Städtewertungen ist die Religion, ein politischer Zusammenhang, der seit dem Hellenismus Tradition hat. Die zum Teil bisher ungeklärten Strukturen des Werks, wie die Lückenhaftigkeit oder der kompilative Charakter der Periegese, führt Frateantonio auf verschiedene rhetorische Beschreibungsprinzipien zurück, die sie in ihrem Verhältnis zum kulturellen Kontext der Zweiten Sophistik untersucht. Das dominante Vorbild des Pausanias sieht die Autorin in dem hellenistischen Historiker Polemon von Ilion.

Kaiser Julian II., der so genannte Apostat (Abtrünnige), versuchte während seiner kurzen Regierungszeit im 4. Jahrhundert, das Christentum philosophisch zu bekämpfen und eine heidnisch-neuplatonische Doktrin als Gegenprogramm aufzustellen. Der Band vereint Beiträge zum allgemeinen Verhältnis von Platonismus und Christentum, zu Julians Persönlichkeit und philosophischem Programm sowie zu einzelnen Schriften, in denen der Kaiser seinen eigenen Standpunkt und seine Kritik am christlichen Denken ausführt.

Gegenstand des Buches sind die literarischen Gemeinplätze (Topoi) in der griechischen mittelalterlichen Heiligenliteratur. Thomas Pratsch bietet hier zum einen eine umfassende Materialsammlung, die eine vollständige Systematik der Topoi enthält. Daneben gelangt er zu neuen Ergebnissen hinsichtlich der Verwendung der Topoi und der Frage ihres historischen Wertes sowie der Entstehung, Überlieferung und Entwicklung griechischer Heiligenviten. Dabei zeichnet er unter anderem die schrittweise Entstehung einer Heiligenvita aus verschiedenen anderen literarischen Formen nach und untermauert aus einem neuen Blickwinkel die These der Kanonisierung der griechischen Heiligenliteratur gegen Ende des 10. und im Laufe des 11. Jahrhunderts. Ein Referenzwerk zur byzantinischen hagiographischen Literatur.

Ammian gilt als der größte Historiker der Spätantike. Doch seine geographisch-ethnographischen Exkurse über Gallien, Ägypten, Persien und über nomadische Fremdvölker wie Sarazenen, Alanen und Hunnen wurden lange als imitierte Gelehrsamkeit und überflüssige Unterbrechung des Geschichtsverlaufs unterschätzt. In den klassischen Lehren der Rhetorik, der metaphorischen Lesung der Landschaften, der Konstituierung von Erinnerungsräumen und Gegenwelten zum Imperium Romanum deckt die Autorin den Schlüssel für das Verständnis des Gesamtwerks auf: Geschichtsverständnis und Diskurse über geographisches Wissen bedingen einander. Dadurch erscheint auch Ammians schriftstellerische Leistung in einem neuen Licht. So gewinnt der Leser einerseits eine Fülle von gesichertem Forschungswissen über die unbekannten ,Ränder der antiken Welt' und nimmt andererseits die Exkurse nicht länger als schmückendes Beiwerk der Haupthandlung wahr, sondern als sinnkonstituierende Partien innerhalb dieser.

Im August 2010 jährte sich zum 1600. Mal die Plünderung Roms durch den Gothen Alarich. Dieses Ereignis wurde von Paganen und Christen gleichermassen zu einem Weltereignis stilisiert und fand ein vielfältiges Echo in zeitgenössischer und späterer Literatur. Dieser Sammelband analysiert die Bewertung dieses Falls Roms aus textwissenschaftlicher, historischer und theologischer Perspektive interdisziplinär bis ins hohe Mittelalter, unter Berücksichtigung des Rückblicks der späteren Byzantiner sowie ausgewählter Reaktionen der lateinischen und volkssprachigen Literatur im Westen. Es kann gezeigt werden, dass viele Kulturträger in ein ¿Netzwerk¿ integriert waren, sei es Rom bejahend oder auch in skeptischer bis ablehnender Distanz. Diese unaufgelöste Spannung führte dazu, dass die ¿Katastrophe¿ von 410, obgleich historisch von relativ geringer Bedeutung, enorme literarische Kräfte mit dem Ziel der mentalen Identitätsbestimmung freisetzte.

In the World of the Second Sophistic, the Roman Empire's Greek elite turned education, paideia, and knowledge of the Classical age into a vital factor in their struggle for political power.

"Ein staatsmännisches Genie ersten Ranges", so nannte Theodor Mommsen 1886 Diokletian, jenen Dalmatiner, der es vom Freigelassenen bis zum Kaiser gebracht hatte. Diokletian hat das in der Reichskrise der Soldatenkaiserzeit zerrüttete Imperium wieder stabilisiert und sich nach seiner Abdankung 305 in den großartigen Alterspalast Spalato (Split, Kroatien) zurückgezogen. Wenn er auch mit seiner Nachfolgeregelung, seiner Preiskontrolle und seiner christenfeindlichen Politik keinen dauerhaften Erfolg hatte, so boten doch seine umfassenden Reformen die Voraussetzungen für Constantin und den Übergang in die Spätantike. Die hier vorgelegten Beiträge der 2003 in Split durchgeführten internationalen Tagung namhafter Gelehrter aus Deutschland, Großbritannien, Kroatien, Slowenien und der Schweiz präsentieren die Forschungslage zur Tetrarchie, zu ihren politischen, sozialen, ökonomischen, ideologischen, religionshistorischen und archäologischen Aspekten sowie zur Rezeption Diokletians bis in die Neuzeit.

Between the 3rd and 5th centuries AD Rome underwent a process of transformation which profoundly marked the urban, social, and religious structure of the city. Examining the memory of saints, this study inspects a central field in which this structural change took place.
