    29,00 €

Among the most important contributions the National Park Service has made since its founding in 1916 has been the development of extraordinary museum technology and administration---national in scope and international in influence. This manual, a distillation of what many persons have learned about the day-to-day operations of museums, is meant to provide curatorial standards and serve as a reference for museum workers everywhere. This book was written by Ralph H. Lewis, an outstanding museum administrator and curator with many years of experience in the National Park Service. It is an outgrowth of an earlier (1941) volume entitled Field Manual for Museums by Ned J. Burns, a work that went out of print during World War II and is, even to this day, in demand by curators and museum managers. In this present manual, Mr. Lewis carries on a tradition of excellence in museum practice that can be traced back to the mid-1930's when Carl P. Russell set the basic pattern for museum work in the national parks. In those early years most park museums could not afford or were too small to engage a full time professional museum staff. Dr. Russell set up centralized laboratories staffed by curators and preparators and provided the parks with exhibition and preservation expertise from this pool. The ordinary maintenance and operation of the museums were left to the superintendents who managed the parks, and to the archeologists, historians and naturalists who interpreted them.

  • - A History and Analysis of 173 Engagements
    von Fred Eugene Ray
    44,00 €

In the 5th century B.C., Greece was a patchwork country of small, independent city-states whose tendency to fight each other was offset only by strong ties to common cultural elements such as language and a unique style of warfare. While surviving myths emphasize heroics and honor, the reality of ancient Greek warfare was that of regular men dealing with everyday problems. Relying heavily on primary sources such as Herodotus, Thucydides and Plutarch, this volume provides the first-ever tactical level survey of all 173 Greek land engagements which occurred during the 5th century B.C., a seminal period in the history of western warfare. Using carefully researched logical probabilities to extend surviving records, the author places each battle within its historical context and analyzes it with a view to documenting significant overall patterns of action. The result is not only a detailed study of each battle complete with maps and battlefield diagrams, but also an overview of general trends in 5th century Greek warfare.

Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners (1666) is a spiritual autobiography by English author and Puritan preacher John Bunyan. Written while Bunyan was serving a lengthy prison sentence for preaching without a license, Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners is both a record of Bunyan's personal experience, the story of his conversion, and a document of a time of historical and political crisis in England. The restoration of King Charles II to the throne in 1660-which followed years of sectarian violence and the 1649 execution of his father Charles I-initiated a period of religious and political repression. Nonconformist Christians, and preachers especially, were forbidden from practicing their faith, a crime for which Bunyan was arrested. He was tried and convicted in 1661, spending the next twelve years in Bedford County Gaol.Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners, written and published during this period, is the story of Bunyan's life, focusing on his conversion to Puritanism and his personal trials as a man punished for his beliefs. Containing numerous biblical references, Bunyan's work is similar to Saint Augustine's Confessions in its compositional structure-beginning with the author's sinful youth, it moves through his process of conversion to his growth as a Christian and rise to the status of preacher. Where it differs, however, is in its detailed description of Bunyan's arrest and imprisonment, a time he relied on his belief in God to carry him safely through. While less popular than The Pilgrim's Progress, a Christian allegory Bunyan began writing in jail, Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners is an important and powerful work which has inspired generations of Christians, including John Brown and Martin Luther King Jr.With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of John Bunyan's Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners is a classic of English literature reimagined for modern readers.
