This 1897 account of slavery in the French Caribbean emphasised its economic benefits to the islands, downplayed by early revisionist historians. It discusses the legislation (the Code Noir) that governed all aspects of slavery in the French colonies, as well as the living conditions, religion and morality of the slaves.
