First on the Antarctic Continent

Norwegian-born Carsten Egeberg Borchgrevink (1864-1934) led the British Antarctic Expedition (1898-1900), which overwintered for the first time on the continent. The expedition constructed the first building in Antarctica, was the first to use sledge dogs, and set a new farthest south record. This illustrated 1901 publication illuminates these endeavours.
