Maize is the world's main agricultural crop and future projections show that it will continue to be the most important cereal. As far as plant breeding is concerned, one of the most efficient methods has been recurrent selection as a strategy for obtaining continuous genetic gains. With this in mind, in 2014 the Federal Institute of Espírito Santo Campus Itapina began a genetic improvement programme for maize via interpopulation reciprocal recurrent selection in complete sibling families. This project is a pioneer in this respect and aims to make new interpopulation maize hybrids available to the north-western region of Espírito Santos in the future.

This paper focuses on the problem of improving teacher training in Higher Education Institutes and Universities. We consider that the improvement of the training of professionals graduating from teacher training courses lies fundamentally, among other variables, in the possibility of linking the problems of teaching and learning that are developed in different school contexts with the characteristics and particularities of youth culture. Now, what are the characteristics of teaching and learning processes in school contexts? What qualities of pedagogical mediation favor significant learning in students? What aspects of teacher mediation are valued by students in their learning processes? What aspects and characteristics of youth cultures are present in these processes?

Water pollution is undoubtedly becoming the major issue of the 21st century, and one of the main concerns of scientists and government bodies alike. Industrial discharges containing various contaminants are posing serious problems in many countries around the world, prompting them to find and develop appropriate, economically viable and environmentally-friendly treatment methods for recycling wastewater. It is within this framework that this work falls, the ultimate objective of which is to evaluate the potential use of coffee grounds, in their raw state or activated in the form of activated carbon, in the treatment of industrial waste loaded with colorants and heavy metals. The first part of the project involved the preparation and characterization of coffee grounds and their carbon. The results showed that this waste can be used as a raw adsorbent or as a precursor for the production of activated carbon. Physicochemical characterization of the prepared activated carbon revealed that it has properties close to those of a commercial activated carbon.

This is the challenge for education in the 21st century, this is the age of connectivity and ubiquity. Here are the 4 (E): a) Teaching, the figure of the teacher remains opportune, starting from formal content, contained in planning, presenting, conceptualising and contextualising, demonstrating the historical process; b) Role-playing, the teacher becomes a mediator, in tune with the indication of formal content, with the addition of a presupposition (problem): film, song, text, report, metaphor or a one-off or global event, promotes a blended, and with the devices develop and carry out the proposed activities so that analysis and reflection occur, and search for intersections between the presentations offered by the teacher; c) Enchant, offer challenges, the student becomes the centre of attention, is demonstrated and led to understand that he or she is the protagonist in the production of knowledge, through technologies, cooperation and empathy; can question, suggest, innovate, recreate possibilities and perspectives of epistemology, entrepreneurship, citizenship and diversity; d) Undertake, is encouraged to create, improve, develop, enhance a technology, process and/or a product.

Radium-223 dichloride (Ra-223) is an alpha particle-emitting radiopharmaceutical whose licensed indication in patients with castration-resistant prostate cancer with bone metastases (CRPCm) was modified in June 2018, due to the appearance of drug-drug interactions with common drugs in CRPCm such as abiraterone and prednisone/prednisolone. Thus, it was restricted to use in monotherapy or combination with luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone analogues, becoming third-line treatment in patients with CRPCm, for which evidence on its effectiveness and safety in this new context is lacking.

The use of digital images has an interesting place in the analysis and physiology of seeds and in quality control programmes due to its practicality, objectivity and speed in obtaining results. The book 'Image analysis in the performance and vigour of coffee seeds' covers the general panorama of the use of radiographic image analysis techniques and digital image analysis of seedlings in this crop. It also presents the results of a study that aimed to evaluate the internal morphology of seeds using the X-ray test and its relationship with germination performance, as well as to test the efficiency of digital image analysis of seedlings using the Seed Vigor Imaging System (SVIS®) in determining vigour, compared to conventionally used tests. It is with great satisfaction that we present this first edition, hoping that it will be a contribution to the seed and seedling image analysis sector, especially for those who are interested in including these new techniques in the seed science and technology sector for crops as important as coffee.

From our childhood to the present day, education has changed in all its dimensions. The forms, methods and strategies of teaching-learning have been transformed with the advance of science: from traditional to modernity. The teacher who used to teach, now learns together with the children and interlearning is taking place. The use of ICT in education leads us to self-learning and learning at a planetary level. The approaches and theories of learning nowadays allow teachers to apply new ways of interacting with students to achieve their learning; definitely, in the connectivism approach, teachers have to face new ways of teaching and learning. The text "Cognitive Learning Strategies" that we present will allow education professionals to lead students to learn to think and learn to learn. It will facilitate the student to know diverse strategies to achieve learning in an autonomous way.

This book deals with the most relevant aspects of arthropods and poisonous animals existing in the Mexican Republic. Agents that, due to their close relationship with man since ancient times, have caused important damages to health, plagues to crops, and have been feared and venerated. To date, they continue to be a reason not only for phobias but also for their stings and bites, which generate the main reasons for consultation.

Currently, chronic renal failure is one of the ten leading causes of death according to statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO); this disease affects a significant percentage of the population, mainly because its main causes lie in chronic diseases of high prevalence such as diabetes and hypertension, which cause irreversible damage to the kidney and progressive loss of renal function. Based on this problem, the present research was carried out to determine the incidence and determining factors of chronic renal failure in users attending the Dialysis Unit of the San Vicente de Paul Hospital. The information was obtained through the application of surveys to 30 patients of the Dialysis Unit who were taken as the universe. The surveys showed that the determining factors of chronic renal failure are: diabetes, arterial hypertension, hereditary factor and the aging process. After obtaining these results, a prevention guide called "Promoting lifestyles in patients with renal failure" was prepared.

In this research, a study has been carried out on how Citizen Participation has managed to influence the formulation and execution of Public Policies in the city of Bogota. The case study that has been chosen has been that of the Domiciliary Public Services (Water) in the government periods of Luis Eduardo Garzón (2004-2008) and Samuel Moreno (2008-211). Within this period of time we analyzed the mechanisms and public policies that promoted and facilitated citizen participation in decision making regarding such a vital and important issue as Public Utilities in the city of Bogota.

The present work is comprised of a series of studies linked to territorial development as a research topic. In principle, the interest is directed to the study of public policies for territorial development, new strategies within the framework of a new development paradigm, such as the capacity for innovation and entrepreneurship of regions and localities to face structural problems of regional inequality and thus improve the cohesion of these territorial spaces. On the other hand, certain recent social phenomena in Uruguay, such as municipalization and its correlation with the formal instances created within the framework of political decentralization processes that give rise to new emerging spaces for citizen participation, are discussed. Likewise, the issue of the conceptualization of development is debated, questioning the old definition linked to economic growth, with the irruption of the new way of contemplating development by the UNDP, such as the economist Amartya Sen, with his theoretical-methodological contributions regarding the alternative paradigm of human development, within the framework of globalization and asymmetrical character.

Nurses working shifts are subject to poor sleep quality, as well as circadian rhythm disturbances, increased exposure to viral diseases and stress. All of these can modify the composition of gut bacteria through stress hormones, inflammation and autonomic alterations. In turn, gut bacteria release metabolites, toxins and neurohormones that can alter eating behavior and mood, what is known as the gut-brain axis. Gut bacteria can also negatively regulate stress and immune system responsiveness, which probiotic supplementation can attenuate by providing a method of manipulating the microbiota. The aim of this study is to assess the possible relationship of gut microbiota to well-being in shift-work nurses.

This book was conceived in the final semester of the master's program in Linguistics and Communication. One of our professors mentioned, without much detail or enthusiasm, the term polyphony, which immediately attracted my attention. He also alluded to the author of this concept, Mikhail Bakhtin, a Russian philologist with an eventful life who developed his brilliant theories while circumventing the iron control exercised over original and innovative ideas by the sinister Stalinist dictatorship. His life was novel because it was shrouded in mystery, even his authorship of polyphony and his main books had been questioned. He was accused of plagiarism, of having appropriated the intellectual production of his confreres of the linguistic circle of ... This is an irresolvable controversy at this point and does not detract from the importance and transcendence of this intellectual who elucidated his main ideas by fighting against personal physical adversities and an obscurantist and repressive environment, perhaps the worst after the Inquisition in the Middle Ages. He died without enjoying the prestige and glory he should have reaped for his brilliant ideas.

This is a qualitative study, which gave voice to nurses in the care of the hospitalized dying elderly who expressed their experience that implies considering the particularities of age such as physical, emotional, social and spiritual characteristics. They consider it a challenge for nursing because the decisions of the patient and the family must be respected, as well as the policies of public health institutions which need to be reviewed so that the family can remain close to the dying older adult, since it is their right to die in the company of their loved ones. It is recognized that this care is a nursing specialty that requires specific professional knowledge and skills and a certain professional structure in health institutions to accompany the elderly in the hospital to a dignified death.

Educational technologies are tools that help us to motivate learners, enhance their creativity and establish new ways of teaching and learning. In this augmented learning, students, autonomously and guided by their interests, move towards lifelong learning. For this reason, this book offers diverse pedagogical experiences using technologies at the higher education level. During the different experiences, students share knowledge, promote the development of self-esteem, work in collaborative spaces, generate spaces to express their own beliefs and school biographies about their emotions during the pedagogical experiences. It will be fundamental to incorporate a new vision of technologies for students to link with each other, transforming information into knowledge and being able to learn with others, and in this way interact collaboratively to build knowledge.

There is growing concern about the impact of architecture on the environment, and construction is increasingly moving towards socio-environmental sustainability. However, the search for a harmonious relationship between building, man and nature is nothing new and has often been present in societies, including through vernacular practice. This book discusses the importance of vernacular architecture - in particular the construction of wooden homes in the city of Curitiba and the surrounding region - and demonstrates the application of some of its elements and principles in today's panorama, in order to reduce environmental impact and produce buildings of technical and aesthetic quality.For this analysis, Caixa Econômica's Selo Casa Azul sustainability assessment system was used. This assessment includes socio-economic, functional and environmental comfort aspects. Without advocating the recreation, rescue or regression of this popular architecture - since it is part of its essence to evolve over time until it reaches ideal forms, as it still does today - the aim is to highlight its points of relevance in terms of building sustainability.

Hospital-acquired infections are those acquired after a patient is admitted to hospital and which manifest themselves during hospitalisation or after discharge, and may be related to hospitalisation or hospital procedures. When seeking care in a hospital, the expectation is that this service will offer comprehensive care, with material and technical resources, and qualified staff capable of continuous care, which not only cures, but also contributes to emotional support and stress inhibition for patients.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo in general, and the province of North Kivu in particular, abound in mining and ecological potential. The province is unique in that its subsoil harbors rare minerals that are the envy of modern industry. Previous prospecting has facilitated the artisanal mining of Coltan (Colombo-Tantalite), pyrochlore, wolframite, tourmaline and gold in the Masisi, Rutshuru, Lubero and Beni territories, as well as the industrial extraction of cassiterite (tin) in the Walikale territory.Situated in a region with a paradisiacal climate, these minerals are often exploited by a number of players, sometimes controlled by the state, sometimes uncontrolled. The environment is sacrificed, and its permanent peril causes many consequences, such as landslides, erosion, floods, storms, extreme temperatures and drought. This article aims to provide solutions to the problem of prioritization of mining and/or environmental needs by the Congolese government, operators and local communities.

The production of leafy vegetables in different countries is very important to guarantee food to families in rural and urban areas, for that reason vertical containers are implemented to maximize the use of air space in a protected environment. The treatments were T1= 30 centimeters between plants, T2=10 centimeters between plants, T3=20 centimeters between plants and T4=30 centimeters between plants, the last 3 treatments are in a vertical system and the rest in a horizontal or traditional system. The yields obtained from the different treatments are as follows: T1= 31.8 Kg, T2= 23.7Kg, T3= 58.2 Kg and T4= 80.2 Kg/m2. It is also worth mentioning the beneficial cost of the different treatments: 1.4 Bs, 0.93 Bs, 2.3 Bs and 3.2 Bs, which means that treatments 3 and 4 are the ones that obtain the highest yield with respect to the control treatment 1.

Through research and data collected using the State of Knowledge, our book demonstrates the importance of the applicability of Financial Education within the teaching and learning process, right from primary school. This book demonstrates proposals based on pre-existing indicators, what may need to be changed in terms of teaching, intervention and adaptation with regard to Financial Education from the initial grades, right through primary school. Our journey during the evaluation of the 20 dissertations chosen for analysis and development of our study showed us that perhaps we should change the order of the work, i.e. curriculum evaluation, revision of pedagogical material in the subject of Financial Mathematics, training of teaching staff and continuous monitoring of the teaching-learning process, making the necessary adaptations to make the teaching of Financial Mathematics effective.

Being in the era of the image, the evolution of the representation of the environment through photography has been a constant interaction between society. Nowadays, the perception of a photograph on a smartphone seen in a short period of time, as it happens most of the times, in a social space such as social networks, where the multidiversity of the collective that conforms it, makes its interpretation complex, although it is already known as polysemic. Several authors have sought new readings of the image. The interdiscipline gives an alternative reading from the epistemology, offering an approach to the structure of the mind of the one who captures and the one who sees it. This book is an introduction to the interdisciplinary research of perception and interpretation in photography seen on smartphones, which seems to be that you not only portray your environment, in photography there is also a possibility that there is a drawing of your mind.

I'm Danielle Navarro, an elementary school teacher and psycho-pedagogue. Even as a resident of a municipality neighbouring a capital city, I've been able to understand, in various situations, the difficulties faced by country dwellers, one of which was that of gaining a higher education. In order to achieve this feat, our fellow countrymen used to go back and forth (by bus) every day to the capital or to Maracajú (a neighbouring city) to study at a face-to-face college; these journeys were paid for, long and very tiring. On several occasions, these students were left on the roads at dawn. Faced with this situation, this is the result of the research I am presenting to you, since Distance Education has become an emerging topic and, due to its current scope, has also taken up space in academic research. So I saw the importance of looking at distance education, a little of its history and the role of the tutor in distance education courses in the municipality of Sidrolândia, in the interior of Mato Grosso do Sul. Internationally mobile scientists are exposed to other researchers with different skills and are probably also exposed to resources they haven't had access to before. This can increase their research capacity and increase their intellectual capital. This study postulates that, in a similar way, academics on the move will be able to have the same experiences as scientists and contribute knowledge on their return to their country of origin, both in the academic environment and in the workplace.

Historical observation shows that all metaphysical traditions use symbols, "ayat" signs, examples, models and archetypes to support a conception. Thus, the animal is a symbol, a support and a means of conception, among many others. In this option, we can say that God in certain Traditions or nature in others, has deposited in each species reasons for wisdom and models of moral conduct for man to benefit from in his path of teaching and journey towards origin. Thus, the nature of animals is created only to be useful. The universe is a harmonious whole: "there is nothing evil in the world. Everything in its place is good". On the other hand, human beings project their own passions onto imaginary characters. We project our own immediate irregular elements, our own instincts, onto animals.

The intentionality of the research is based on a Hermeneutics of the Managerial Praxis in the use of Social Networks for Scientific Publications in the Communicative University Context. Case: Universidad Nacional Experimental de los Llanos Centrales Rómulo Gallegos, in this sense, the scientific concern of the researcher starts from an absence of the use of the platform of social networks, for the dissemination of scientific publications through a managerial administrative process.

Preoperative anxiety can have an impact on the medical and psychological aftermath of surgery and prolong postoperative recovery. Our aim was to estimate the prevalence of preoperative anxiety and determine the factors associated with it. We conducted a descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study of a series of 100 cases operated on in hospitals in the Gabès region (Tunisia) over a 6-month period, using a questionnaire covering both the pre-operative and post-operative periods and scales to measure patient anxiety. Among the 100 patients, the surgical procedure was digestive in 67% of cases, indicated as an emergency in 52% of cases, and the prevalence of preoperative anxiety was 32%. Factors found to be related to preoperative anxiety were blood group B, malignant nature of pathology, type of surgery, severity of surgery, preoperative information, presence of preoperative anxiety, systolic blood pressure, trait anxiety, and occurrence of intraoperative incidents and postoperative complications.

African culture manifests itself in different ways in people's lives, at all stages, from birth to death. However, we can see that some specific features, such as the polygamy discussed and analysed in this book, need to be updated and therefore deserve a conscious review. The aim of these changes and updates is to open up horizons so that current and future generations do not encounter obstacles in possible intercultural relationships. By way of example, the Makhuwa people must intelligently realise that accepting and practising polygamy as a type of marriage is a criminal offence in Western culture. However, with the current rapprochement resulting from globalisation, young Makhuwa people should be more open to new opportunities and create new friendships and marriages with people from other cultures, including those from the West, without fear of rejection or even prejudice.
