Norah Barongo-Muweke aims to reconstruct a theory of citizenship education for the postcolonial South. She works towards fostering scientific construction and mainstreaming of postcoloniality as analytical category, dimension of gender, policy, sustainable learning and societal transformation. A consistent conceptual framework for theorising together gender and postcoloniality is absent so far. In her analyses  citizenship awareness and its bedrock institutions are eroded.

Johannes Schotz presents the first measurements of optical electro-magnetic near-fields around nanostructures with subcycle-resolution. The ability to measure and understand light-matter interactions on the nanoscale is an important component for the development of light-wave-electronics, the control and steering of electron dynamics with the frequency of light, which promises a speed-up by several orders of magnitude compared to conventional electronics. The experiments presented here on metallic nanotips, widely used in experiments and applications, do not only demonstrate the feasibility of attosecond streaking as a unique tool for fundamental studies of ultrafast nanophotonics but also represent a first important step towards this goal.

In experiments on aprototypical combustor, Richard Steinert identifies new insights on the impactof noise on the phenomenon known as thermoacoustic instability. The phenomenonis a concerning issue which creates a technical limit on the efficiency andenvironmental impact of fossil fuels combustion in industrial combustors. Itposes a threat to the structural integrity of practical systems such as gasturbine combustors and rocket engines. The experiments demonstrate thatthermoacoustic systems feature an interesting noise-induced behaviour known ascoherence resonance - a coherent response of dynamical systems close to theirstability boundary that is induced by stochastic excitation. The work containedin this publication is an example illustrating the importance of fundamentalconsiderations in solving perplexing engineering issues.

Daniel Halwidl presents the development of an effusive molecular beam apparatus, which allows the dosing of gases, liquids, and solids in ultra-high vacuum. The apparatus is designed to adsorb precise and reproducible doses to a defined area on metal oxide samples, which is required in Temperature Programmed Desorption and other surface chemistry experiments. The design and the construction of the apparatus is described. The properties of the molecular beam are experimentally confirmed. The beam profile has a core diameter of 3.5 mm and a standard core pressure of 4 x 10-8 mbar, while the background pressure is 4 orders of magnitude lower. 

SebastianGrg introduces social workflows as a new application domain for Process-AwareInformation Systems and draws the design of a social workflow platform thatenables private individuals to make use of workflow technology in theireveryday lives. Whenever a group of persons works together on a challenging ormultifaceted task, a social workflow begins. In textual form, such socialworkflows are already described and shared in various Internet communitieswhich provide experiential knowledge for achieving different goals, in areaslike home repair, vacation trips and computer troubleshooting. The envisionedplatform enables its users to construct social workflows according to theirspecific needs, to share them with a community and to keep track of theexecution.

Jan Niklas Kocks explores the effects of the now almost ubiquitous online media on political media relations and the interactions defining them. He analyses the ways in which leading political spokespersons and journalists perceive digitisation in terms of technological, organisational and political change as well as the actual adaptations of digitisation on an individual and organisational level. Political media relations are approached from a perspective of social network analysis. Findings indicate a picture of political media relations as a continuing elite phenomenon. Networks are still mostly characterised by exclusive arrangements - and often to an even larger degree than the actors involved actually perceive. 

This work covers field programmable gate array(FPGA)-specific optimizations of circuits computing the multiplication of avariable by several constants, commonly denoted as multiple constantmultiplication (MCM). These optimizations focus on low resource usage but highperformance. They comprise the use of fast carry-chains in adder-based constantmultiplications including ternary (3-input) adders as well as the integrationof look-up table-based constant multipliers and embedded multipliers to get theoptimal mapping to modern FPGAs. The proposed methods can be used for theefficient implementation of digital filters, discrete transforms and many othercircuits in the domain of digital signal processing, communication and imageprocessing.

Carolin Loos introduces two novel approaches for theanalysis of single-cell data. Both approaches can be used to study cellularheterogeneity and therefore advance a holistic understanding of biologicalprocesses. The first method, ODE constrained mixture modeling, enables theidentification of subpopulation structures and sources of variability in single-cellsnapshot data. The second method estimates parameters of single-cell time-lapsedata using approximate Bayesian computation and is able to exploit the temporalcross-correlation of the data as well as lineage information. 

Linlin Li addresses the analysis and design issues ofobserver-based FD and FTC for nonlinear systems. The author analyses theexistence conditions for the nonlinear observer-based FD systems to gain adeeper insight into the construction of FD systems. Aided by the T-S fuzzytechnique, she recommends different design schemes, among them the L_inf/L_2type of FD systems. The derived FD and FTC approaches are verified by twobenchmark processes.

SashaWang revisits the van Hiele model of geometric thinking with Sfard's discursiveframework to investigate geometric thinking from a discourse perspective. Theauthor focuses on describing and analyzing pre-service teachers' geometricdiscourse across different van Hiele levels. The explanatory power of Sfard'sframework provides a rich description of how pre-service teachers think in thecontext of quadrilaterals. It also contributes to our understanding of humanthinking that is illustrated through the analysis of geometric discourseaccompanied by vignettes.

This master's thesis presents a novel approach to finding trajectories with minimal end time for kinematically redundant manipulators. Emphasis is given to a general applicability of the developed method to industrial tasks such as gluing or welding. Minimum-time trajectories may yield economic advantages as a shorter trajectory duration results in a lower task cycle time. Whereas kinematically redundant manipulators possess increased dexterity, compared to conventional non-redundant manipulators, their inverse kinematics is not unique and requires further treatment. In this work a joint space decomposition approach is introduced that takes advantage of the closed form inverse kinematics solution of non-redundant robots. Kinematic redundancy can be fully exploited to achieve minimum-time trajectories for prescribed end-effector paths.

How is it possible to fight against Female GenitalMutilation (FGM) without disrespecting traditional values? This study analyses'film' as a tool for Human RightsEducation in Burkina Faso, especially when it includes thoughtstructures of the local communities. Here, the innovative approach of cin dbat, a particularcinematic awareness-raising strategy is applied and analysed. Thus, thisresearch describes how a documentary film about FGM in Burkina Faso was produced and presented. It isbelieved that the critical reconsideration of one's own thoughts represents aprerequisite for changing habits. The aim is to find solutions within thetraditional context of the country, not to dictate or instruct behaviourpatterns to the locals.

In hismaster thesis, Vladimir Herdt presents a novel approach, called completesymbolic simulation, for a more efficient verification ofmuch larger (non-terminating) SystemC programs. Theapproach combines symbolic simulation with stateful model checking and allowsto verify safety properties in (cyclic) finite state spaces, by exhaustiveexploration of all possible inputs and process schedulings. The state explosionproblem is alleviated by integrating two complementary reduction techniques. Comparedto existing approaches, the complete symbolic simulation works more efficiently,and therefore can provide correctness proofs for larger systems, which is oneof the most challenging tasks, due to the ever increasing complexity.

In his master thesis,Sven Painer develops, implements, and evaluates a method to reconstruct theliver surface from monocular mini-laparoscopic sequences. The principal focus ofhis research is to create a basis for helping clinicians to write reports withquantitative descriptions of the liver surface. A Structure from Motion approachis performed to do a sparse reconstruction of the liver surface and subsequentlythis information is used in a variation based dense 3D reconstruction. Thealgorithms are formulated in a causal way, enabling the implementation to be runin real-time on an adequate hardware platform. The results show a significantperformance increase and pave the way to give clinicians a feedback duringvideo capturing to improve the quality of the reconstruction in the nearfuture.

As in disasters the availability of information andcommunication technology services can be severely disrupted, the authorexplores challenges and opportunities to work around such disruptions. Hetherefore empirically analyzes how people in disasters use remnants oftechnology to still communicate their needs. Based on this, he suggests qualityattributes whose implementation can support the resilience in technology. Toexemplify this he develops iteratively two mobile ad-hoc systems and explorestheir feasibility and implications for emergency response under close-to-realconditions. Compared to the state of the art both systems are independent frompreexisting network infrastructure and run on off-the-shelf smartphones.

Stefan Nanz investigates the necessity for threemultipole families in classical electrodynamics. He shows that by imposingsymmetry and parity constraints, it is sufficient to deal with only twomultipole families. This implies that the toroidal multipole moments do notrepresent an independent multipole family, and they only emerge in the long-wavelength limit.

Leonid Ryvkin gives a motivated and self-sustainedintroduction to n-plectic geometry with a special focus on symmetries. Therelevant algebraic structures from scratch are developed. The author generalizesknown symplectic notions, notably observables and symmetries, to the n-plecticcase, culminating in solving the existence question for co-moment maps forgeneral pre-n-plectic manifolds. Finally partial results scattered along theliterature are derived from our general result.

Tobias Brandt outlines how information technology (IT) can be used tointegrate sustainable energy technologies into existing infrastructures. Thetopic is approached from micro, meso, as well as macro perspectives. He firstdescribes how IT artifacts can be used to manage renewable energy sources andenergy storage devices in individual households and microgrids for an improvedeconomic and ecological performance. The author proceeds by assessing theeconomic feasibility of aggregating electric vehicles for large-scale energystorage. The final chapter explores the issue of stability in automatedmechanisms. A game-theoretical model is first introduced for financial marketsand later transferred to the automated management of energy demand.

This book contains a novel combination of experimentaland model-based investigations, elucidating the complex processes inside zincair batteries. The work presented helps to answer which battery composition andwhich air-composition should be adjusted to maintain stable and efficientcharge/discharge cycling. In detail, electrochemical investigations and X-raytransmission tomography are applied on button cell zinc air batteries andin-house set-ups. Moreover, model-based investigations of the battery anode andthe impact of relative humidity, active operation, carbon dioxide and oxygen onzinc air battery operation are presented. Thetechniques used in this work complement each other well and yield an unprecedented understanding of zinc airbatteries. The methods applied are adaptable and can potentially be applied togain further understanding of other metal air batteries.

Holger Bartolf discusses state-of-the-art detection concepts based on superconducting nanotechnology as well as sophisticated analytical formulae that model dissipative fluctuation-phenomena in superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors. Such knowledge is desirable for the development of advanced devices which are designed to possess an intrinsic robustness against vortex-fluctuations and it provides the perspective for honorable fundamental science in condensed matter physics. Especially the nanowire detector allows for ultra-low noise detection of signals with single-photon sensitivity and GHz repetition rates. Such devices have a huge potential for future technological impact and might enable unique applications (e.g. high rate interplanetary deep-space data links from Mars to Earth).
