Jahrhunderts und legt die Grunde fur die Entstehung dieses neuen Berufes dar. Die Mannschaft der Kriegsschiffe bestand lange Zeit aus gentlemen soldiers, die das Kriegshandwerk beherrschten, und den Schiffsleuten, den Tarpaulins, die wussten, wie man ein Schiff segelt und manovriert. Aus der Kooperation und der Konkurrenz dieser beiden Gruppen mit sehr unterschiedlicher sozialer Herkunft, entstand schlielich der Beruf des Marinesoldaten und eine Hierarchie von Marineamtern, die Funktion und Methoden der Ausbildung beider Gruppen miteinander verband. Karl Striegler investigates novel materials for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from water. Graphitic Carbon Nitrides are an interesting class of materials with a structure close to graphite. For overcoming certain limitations, the author used different approaches to functionalize the basic material. He deposited nanoparticles to enhance the catalytic activity and used copolymerization as well as sensitizing to increase the amount of harvested light.

Taking an interdisciplinary approach to conceptualise interpersonal trust between patients and medical practitioners, Katja Beitat introduces a unique model to describe the dynamics of trust building and deterioration with particular relevance to incidents in health care. Empirical findings from studies in Australia and Germany, the two systems focused on in this book, broadly support and expand the proposed dynamic model of trust. Specific communication, competence and care related aspects impact on the trust relationship between patients and practitioners which in return is considered essential for other trust relations in health care.

In his study, Mahdi Derakhshanmanesh builds on the state of the art in modeling by proposing to integrate models into running software on the component-level without translating them to code. Such so-called model-integrating software exploits all advantages of models: models implicitly support a good separation of concerns, they are self-documenting and thus improve understandability and maintainability and in contrast to model-driven approaches there is no synchronization problem anymore between the models and the code generated from them. Using model-integrating components, software will be easier to build and easier to evolve by just modifying the respective model in an editor. Furthermore, software may also adapt itself at runtime by transforming its own model part.

Susanne Michalik analyzes why authoritarian regimes allow for multiparty elections and how they affect political outcomes. Even though their introduction rarely leads to a change in power, such elections should not be regarded as mere window-dressing. She argues that competitive elections are installed to deal with a split among the incumbent elite and to facilitate the formation of a new ruling coalition. In a cross-national study the author finds that elections matter and the ruling party does more than just manipulate election results in order to be reelected. Incumbents provide a mix of public goods and targeted public goods depending on the level of electoral competition they are experiencing. The outcome of authoritarian multiparty elections in the form of the legislature's party composition also has an effect on the regime's international relations in the form of foreign aid allocation.

Michael Schenk evaluates new technologies and methods, such as cryogenic read-out electronics and a UV laser system, developed to optimise the performance of large liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPC). Amongst others, the author studies the uniformity of the electric field produced by a Greinacher high-voltage generator operating at cryogenic temperatures, measures the linear energy transfer (LET) of muons and the longitudinal diffusion coefficient of electrons in liquid argon. The results are obtained by analysing events induced by cosmic-ray muons and UV laser beams. The studies are carried out with ARGONTUBE, a prototype LArTPC in operation at the University of Bern, Switzerland, designed to investigate the feasibility of drift distances of up to five metres for electrons in liquid argon.

By studying the ability of the Normal Tempered Stable (NTS) model to fit thestatistical features of intraday data at a 5 min sampling frequency, Florian Jacobs extends the research on high frequency data as well as the appliance of tempered stable models. He examines the DAX30 returns using ARMA-GARCH NTS, ARMA-GARCH MNTS (Multivariate Normal Tempered Stable) and ARMA-FIGARCH (Fractionally Integrated GARCH) NTS. The models will be benchmarked through their goodness of fit and their VaR and AVaR, as well as in an historical Backtesting.

Tamara Bernadette Aigner designed a set of biocompatible and biodegradable poly(organophosphazenes). In order to tailor their biological and chemical properties, she further modified these macromolecules by adding functional moieties via thiol-ene chemistry. The author used the same photochemistry for crosslinking to obtain a mechanically stable network. She further altered the degradation rate of the matrix as well as the mechanical properties by adding blending agents and created a porous matrix, which is necessary for cell invasion and communication, by a newly developed photocrosslinking particulate-leaching method. Thus, a modular hybrid system was established which is able to adapt to different microenvironments based upon tissue type.

Sandra Haschke presents a strategy to enhance the Fe2O3 electrode performance by controlled nanostructuring of the catalyst surface, based on anodized aluminum oxide coated by means of atomic layer deposition. Furthermore, she investigates the influence of underlying conductive layers and post-deposition annealing on the electrode performance and the associated changes in morphology and chemical composition. Exploiting all effects combined delivers an increase in steady-state water oxidation throughput by a factor of 2.5 with respect to planar electrodes.

Marco Schroter investigates the influence of the local environment on the exciton dynamics within molecular aggregates, which build, e.g., the light-harvesting complexes of plants, bacteria or algae by means of the hierarchy equations of motion (HEOM) method. He addresses the following questions in detail: How can coherent oscillations within a system of coupled molecules be interpreted? What are the changes in the quantum dynamics of the system for increasing coupling strength between electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom? To what extent does decoherence govern the energy transfer properties of molecular aggregates?.

Paul M. Geffert analyses the interplay of noise and time delay in non-excitable nonlinear systems and the modulation of stochastic effects. In particular, the author studies coherence resonance, which is a constructive effect of noise that occurs in nonlinear systems, and demonstrates that it can be modulated by time-delayed feedback. Analytical methods for the investigation of stochastic delay differential equations are developed. Noise or random perturbations and time delay are two phenomena which arise in many fields of physics, chemistry, or biology, just to mention a few examples. The investigated model is a generic Hopf normal form so that these methods and results can be transferred to many different areas of science.

Sara Confalonieri presents an overview of Cardano's mathematical treatises and, in particular, discusses the writings that deal with cubic equations. The author gives an insight into the latest of Cardano's algebraic works, the De Regula Aliza (1570), which displays the attempts to overcome the difficulties entailed by the casus irreducibilis. Notably some of Cardano's strategies in this treatise are thoroughly analyzed. Far from offering an ultimate account of De Regula Aliza, by one of the most outstanding scholars of the 16th century, the present work is a first step towards a better understanding.

Simona Bevern addresses the questions what and why political parties communicate in the time between elections, focusing on the dynamic rise and fall of policy issues. Despite the central role of political parties and the alleged importance of communication, only few scholars have taken a closer look at the content and dynamics of parties' communication in routine times of politics. In this study, interactions between parties' communication, their party competitors, the legislative agenda and public opinion are studied in Germany for the years 2004-2009, making use of a novel data set and quantitative methods.

Jochen Szangolies contributes a novel way of dealing with the problem of the experimental testability of the Kochen-Specker theorem posed by realistic, that is, noisy, measurements. Such noise spoils perfect compatibility between successive measurements, which however is a necessary requirement to test the notion of contextuality in usual approaches. To overcome this difficulty, a new, extended notion of contextuality that reduces to Kochen-Specker contextuality in the limit of perfect measurement implementations is proposed by the author, together with a scheme to test this notion experimentally. Furthermore, the behaviour of these tests under realistic noise conditions is investigated.

Bettina Basel presents experimental conditions which allow to extract the three-spin contribution precisely from experimental multi-spin double electron-electron resonance (DEER) signals. The theory and concepts behind the used techniques, which are among others broadband chirp pump pulses, over coupling of microwave resonators and echo reduction measurements, are discussed and explained in detail. Moreover the setup and results of DEER experiments with newly introduced double chirp pump pulses consisting of two separate chirps are shown. Particular attention is paid to the phenomenon of orientation selection and the concept of orthogonal spin labeling.

In his Master project Sven Herrmann for the first time carried out fundamental investigations into the development of polyoxometalate based ionic liquids (POM-ILs). The POM-ILs were obtained by charge balancing inorganic polyoxometalate (POM) anions with sterically demanding tetraalkylammonium or tetraalkylphosphonium cations. By functionalization of lacunary Keggin clusters with 3d-transition metals and charge balancing with tetraalkylammonium cations of differing chain length, a model system for the correlation of the molecular structure with macroscopic materials properties was obtained. In a systematic approach the syntheses via self-aggregation is presented. Analytic methods comprise UV-Vis, FTIR, NMR, EPR and Mobauer spectroscopy. For determination of the materials properties TGA and DSC were carried out and rheological studies shed light onto the flow characteristics of the highly viscous materials.

The master thesis of Kevin Berk develops a stochastic model for the electricity demand of small and medium-sized companies that is flexible enough so that it can be used for various business sectors. The model incorporates the grid load as an exogenous factor and seasonalities on a daily, weekly and yearly basis. It is demonstrated how the model can be used e.g. for estimating the risk of retail contracts. The uncertainty of electricity demand is an important risk factor for customers as well as for utilities and retailers. As a consequence, forecasting electricity load and its risk is now an integral component of the risk management for all market participants.

Oliver Pamp analyzes the likelihood and extent of pension reforms from a political-economy perspective. It is shown that voters' preferences for or against reforms are influenced by a societies' demographic development, the generosity of its existing public pension scheme and its electoral system. The author extensively reviews existing formal models of pension systems, discusses their merits and limitations, and develops a three-period overlapping generations model. The model's insights regarding individual reform preferences are then put into the context of different electoral systems, thus emphasizing the important role of electoral institutions in the aggregation of societal preferences. Model-based recursive partitioning (MOB) provides a powerful synthesis between machine-learning inspired recursive partitioning methods and regression models. Hanna Birke extends this approach by allowing in addition for measurement error in covariates, as frequently occurring in biometric (or econometric) studies, for instance, when measuring blood pressure or caloric intake per day. After an introduction into the background, the extended methodology is developed in detail for the Cox model and the Weibull model, carefully implemented in R, and investigated in a comprehensive simulation study.

Annette Ranko analyses the Muslim Brotherhood's challenging of the Mubarak regime and the ensuing struggle between the two from 1981 to 2011. She furthermore traces how the group evolved throughout the process of that struggle. She studies how the Brotherhood's portrayal of itself as an attractive alternative to the regime provoked the Mubarak regime to level anti-Brotherhood propaganda in the state-run media in order to contain the group's appeal amongst the public. The author shows how the regime's portrayal of the Brotherhood and the Brotherhood's engagement with it have evolved over time, and how this ideational interplay has combined with structural institutional aspects in shaping the group's behaviour and ideology.
