This book concerns digital communication. Specifically, we treat the transport of bit streams from one geographical location to another over various physical media, such as wire pairs, coaxial cable, optical fiber, and radio. We also treat multiple-access channels, where there are potentially multiple transmitters and receivers sharing a common medium. Ten years have elapsed since the Second Edition, and there have been remarkable advances in wireless communication, including cellular telephony and wireless local-area networks. This Third Edition expands treatment of communication theories underlying wireless, and especially advanced techniques involving multiple antennas, which tum the traditional single-input single-output channel into a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel. This is more than a trivial advance, as it stimulates many advanced techniques such as adaptive antennas and coding techniques that take advantage of space as well as time. This is reflected in the addition of two new chapters, one on the theory of MIMO channels, and the other on diversity techniques for mitigating fading. The field of error-control coding has similarly undergone tremendous changes in the past decade, brought on by the invention of turbo codes in 1993 and the subsequent rediscovery of Gallager's low-density parity-check codes. Our treatment of error-control coding has been rewritten to reflect the current state of the art. Other materials have been reorganized and reworked, and three chapters from the previous edition have been moved to the book's Web site to make room.

Mycotoxins are substances produced from fungal secondary metabolic processes. They impair animal health, thereby causing great economic losses of livestock through disease. Livestock come into contact with mycotoxins through contaminated feedstuff. Feedstuff is any of the constituent nutrients of an animal ration. The plants used in feed, such as grains, oil seeds, nuts, and root crops, are susceptible to mycotoxin contamination. Mycotoxins in Feedstuffs lists (in the style of a dictionary) feeds which have been reported to have been contaminated with mycotoxins, including data on the degree of contamination, the concentration of the toxins, and the country of origin and/or detection of the contaminated feed.This second edition will feature:- More than 180 new publications concerning mycotoxins in feedstuffs. - A more efficient organization of the content, making the book easier to use in daily practice.- A single-chapter overview of mycotoxins in the corresponding feedstuffs.

This book is a revision and extension of my 1995 Sourcebook of Control Systems Engineering. Because of the extensions and other modifications, it has been retitled Handbook of Control Systems Engineering, which it is intended to be for its prime audience: advanced undergraduate students, beginning graduate students, and practising engineers needing an understandable review of the field or recent developments which may prove useful. There are several differences between this edition and the first. * Two new chapters on aspects of nonlinear systems have been incorporated. In the first of these, selected material for nonlinear systems is concentrated on four aspects: showing the value of certain linear controllers, arguing the suitability of algebraic linearization, reviewing the semi-classical methods of harmonic balance, and introducing the nonlinear change of variable technique known as feedback linearization. In the second chapter, the topic of variable structure control, often with sliding mode, is introduced. * Another new chapter introduces discrete event systems, including several approaches to their analysis. * The chapters on robust control and intelligent control have been extensively revised. * Modest revisions and extensions have also been made to other chapters, often to incorporate extensions to nonlinear systems.

This book offers an analytical rather than measure-theoretical approach to the derivation of the partial differential equations of nonlinear filtering theory. The basis for this approach is the discrete numerical scheme used in Monte-Carlo simulations of stochastic differential equations and Wiener's associated path integral representation of the transition probability density. Furthermore, it presents analytical methods for constructing asymptotic approximations to their solution and for synthesizing asymptotically optimal filters. It also offers a new approach to the phase tracking problem, based on optimizing the mean time to loss of lock. The book is based on lecture notes from a one-semester special topics course on stochastic processes and their applications that the author taught many times to graduate students of mathematics, applied mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science, electrical engineering, and other disciplines. The book contains exercises and worked-out examples aimed at illustrating the methods of mathematical modeling and performance analysis of phase trackers.

Colloids are ubiquitous in the food, medical, cosmetics, polymers, water purification, and pharmaceutical industries. The thermal, mechanical, and storage properties of colloids are highly dependent on their interface morphology and their rheological behavior. Numerical methods provide a convenient and reliable tool for the study of colloids.Accelerated Lattice Boltzmann Model for Colloidal Suspensions introduce the main building-blocks for an improved lattice Boltzmann-based numerical tool designed for the study of colloidal rheology and interface morphology. This book also covers the migrating multi-block used to simulate single component, multi-component, multiphase, and single component multiphase flows and their validation by experimental, numerical, and analytical solutions. Among other topics discussed are the hybrid lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) for surfactant-covered droplets; biological suspensions such as blood; used in conjunction with the suppression of coalescence for investigating the rheology of colloids and microvasculature blood flow. The presented LBM model provides a flexible numerical platform consisting of various modules that could be used separately or in combination for the study of a variety of colloids and biological flow deformation problems.

FORTE 2001, formerly FORTE/PSTV conference, is a combined conference of FORTE (Formal Description Techniques for Distributed Systems and Communication Protocols) and PSTV (Protocol Specification, Testing and Verification) conferences. This year the conference has a new name FORTE (Formal Techniques for Networked and Distributed Systems). The previous FORTE began in 1989 and the PSTV conference in 1981. Therefore the new FORTE conference actually has a long history of 21 years. The purpose of this conference is to introduce theories and formal techniques applicable to various engineering stages of networked and distributed systems and to share applications and experiences of them. This FORTE 2001 conference proceedings contains 24 refereed papers and 4 invited papers on the subjects. We regret that many good papers submitted could not be published in this volume due to the lack of space. FORTE 2001 was organized under the auspices of IFIP WG 6.1 by Information and Communications University of Korea. It was financially supported by Ministry of Information and Communication of Korea. We would like to thank every author who submitted a paper to FORTE 2001 and thank the reviewers who generously spent their time on reviewing. Special thanks are due to the reviewers who kindly conducted additional reviews for rigorous review process within a very short time frame. We would like to thank Prof. Guy Leduc, the chairman of IFIP WG 6.1, who made valuable suggestions and shared his experiences for conference organization.

The past decade has seen a steady increase in studies oflemur behavior and ecology. As a result, there is much novel information on newly studied populations, and even newly discovered species, that has not yet been published or summarized. In fact, lemurs have not been the focus of an international symposium since the Prosimian Biology Conference in London in 1972. Moreover, research on lemurs has reached a new quality by addressing general issues in behavioral ecology and evolutionary biology. Although lemurs provide important comparative information on these topics, this aspect of research on lemurs has not been reviewed and compared with similar studies in other primate radiations. Thus, as did many in the field, we felt that the time was ripe to review and synthesize our knowledge of lemur behavioral ecology. Following an initiative by Gerry Doyle, we organized a symposium at the XIVth Congress of the International Primatological Society in Strasbourg, France, where 15 contributions summarized much new information on lemur social systems and their ecological basis. This volume provides a collection of the papers presented at the Strasbourg symposium (plus two reports from recently completed field projects). Each chapter was peer-reviewed, typically by one "e;lemurologist"e; and one other biologist. The first three chapters present novel information from the first long-term field studies of three enigmatic species. Sterling describes the social organization of Daubentonia madagascariensis, showing that aye-aye ranging patterns deviate from those of all other nocturnal primates.

Until recently, communication systems played a minor supporting role in the evolution of computing from mainframes to minis to PCs and servers; today, they are an integral part of almost every aspect of computing, from distributed applications to the Internet. Even experts have trouble keeping up with all of the latest developments in a field that is growing and changing so rapidly. Recognizing the need for researchers and practitioners in all information technology fields to keep up with the state of the art in communications, IFIP's Technical Committee on Communication Systems, TC6, assembled a world-class roster of individual area experts to present a comprehensive "e;State of the Art in Communication Systems"e; programme at the 17th World Computer Congress, which was sponsored by the International Federation for Information processing (IFIP) and held in Montreal, Quebec, Canada in August 2002. Communication Systems: The State of the Art captures the depth and breadth of the field of communication systems: -Architectures and Protocols for Distributed Systems; -Network and Internetwork Architectures; -Performance of Communication Systems; -Internet Applications Engineering; -Management of Networks and Distributed Systems; -Smart Networks; -Wireless Communications; -Communication Systems for Developing Countries; -Photonic Networking; -Communication Systems in Electronic Commerce. This volume's scope and authority present a rare opportunity for people in many different fields to gain a practical understanding of where the leading edge in communication systems lies today-and where it will be tomorrow.

This volume contains the edited texts of the lectures presented at the workshop on Nonlinear Optimization: Theory and Applications, held in Erice at the "e;G. Stampacchia"e; School of Mathematics of the "e;E. Majorana"e; International Centre for Scientific Culture June 13-21, 1995. The meeting was conceived to review and discuss recent advances and promising research trends concerning theory, algorithms, and innovative applications in the field This is a field of mathematics which is providing viable of Nonlinear Optimization. tools in engineering, in economics and in other applied sciences, and which is giving a great contribution also in the solution of the more practiced linear optimization prob- lems. The meeting was attended by approximately 70 people from 18 countries. Besides the lectures, several formal and informal discussions took place. The result was a broad exposure providing a wide and deep understanding of the present research achievements in the field. We wish to express our appreciation for the active contributions of all the partici- pants in the meeting. Our gratitude is due to the Ettore Majorana Center in Erice, which offered its facilities and stimulating environment: its staff was certainly instrumental for the success of the meeting.
