This book studies the thought and actions of Jose Gervasio Artigas, his military victories over the Spanish, and then his successful defense of provincial autonomy before the imperialist ambitions of Buenos Aires, account for his prominence in the Banda Oriental, and the four adjoining provinces of today's Argentina.
