Before King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, there was Charlemagne and his knights, chief of whom was Roland. L'Épine's story (with humor verging on satire) offers an often fantastical glimpse of the age of chivalry, full of love, honour, betrayal, and battles. The story is well-illustrated by the notable Gustave Doré.
