On the Classification and Geographical Distribution of the Mammalia

This book originated in a lecture given in Cambridge in 1859. Owen reviewed every categorisation of mammals in Western science from Aristotle onwards and presented his own detailed classification based on anatomical, biological and physiological characteristics. The appendix sets out Owen's views on the transmutation and extinction of species.
