For generations, men have taken to the road to find themselves. This story picks up the second half of the road journey of Bill Barrister, in his youth a star baseball pitcher, but now a middle-aged man riddled with obsessive thoughts and anxiety, and his buddy, the carefree Godfrey, as they head farther west from their homes in Pennsylvania toward their ultimate destination in California. What are they really searching for out on the road? Adventure? Kicks? Perhaps love? As their journey proceeds across the Southwest, these two men with seemingly disparate personalities find they have more in common than they thought.
