Riddle of the Universe at the Close of the Nineteenth Century

Ernst Haeckel was a keen evolutionist, though he remained sceptical of natural selection. The Riddle of the Universe (1899) puts forward his belief that monism could unify science and philosophy to benefit human progress. The German edition was an instant success, and it appeared in English the following year.
