Über Slavery in three stories by Machado de Assis

The present research work has as its object of analysis three stories by the Brazilian writer Machado de Assis (1839-1908), which will be approached through narratology; specifically through the analysis of the narrator proposed by Renato Prada Oropeza and the construction of the character of Carmen Bustillo, since these narratological elements are relevant in the structure of each story. The Special Degree Project will be divided into four chapters: the first one will present the historical context concerning slavery and information about the author, the second one comprises the theoretical framework, the third chapter presents the methodological framework and finally, the fourth chapter contains the narratological analysis of the chosen corpus. From the study carried out, it was possible to unveil the author's very particular vision of the world, his way of perceiving and interpreting the Brazilian society of his time, which allows us to discover an enormous load of criticism and social denunciation concerning the subject of slavery in nineteenth-century Brazil.
