The adventures in Spartans are set in a time after Babbage but before computers. The Words of Power are available to those with the correct knowledge or contacts, but their use is hard and dangerous, requiring exacting accuracy in the preparation of calculations and patterns, the most renowned of which is the humble pentacle.
The legions of the nether Realms are a horde that will one day break through the Veils and storm the walls of our sanity and humanity. A very few people stand in their way with the knowledge and ability to hold back the tide. The breaches in the Veil are a new Thermopyle; those that stand at the breach are the defenders, the Spartans at the Gates of Fire.
