Santa Khurai was seventeen when she decided to start dressing like a woman.Born male, she had always believed herself to be female, and she claimed herfeminine identity fiercely and openly. Her bold act of wearing dresses and makeupin public brought down upon her the wrath of her father, insults and ridiculewherever she went, and, frequently, beatings at the hands of the armed forceswho are a constant presence in her native Manipur. The humiliation and physicalattacks did not deter her. In her words, 'My desire to be a woman, a beautiful, fashionable woman, was so strong that I was not afraid of challenging anythingthat came in the way... I felt that I could bear anything but I could not live like aman.'The price she has had to pay is high. Knocking on doors for a job, she found thatmost times, no one would employ her because of the way she looked. When sheeventually found success as a make-up artist, with her own beauty parlour, thestress of her struggles sent her spiralling into drug abuse and penury.Fighting her way through these troubles, she became involved with thetransgender movement, and in 2010, she was appointed Secretary of the AllManipur Nupi Maanbi Association (AMaNA). Since then, she has worked closelywith AMaNA and its sister organization, Solidarity and Action Against TheHIV Infection in India (SAATHII). Today, she is at the forefront of the LGBTQmovement in Manipur, travelling the world to speak for her community.Santa Khurai has known the heartbreak of an abusive marriage with aheterosexual man, and the joy of adopting a son; the highs and lows ofinternational recognition and disownment by her own family. Through it all,she has remained true to herself, and refused to be broken. Her story is aninspiration for all humanity.

I was born in a Harlem Hospital raised in Hell's Kitchen. I ran the streets of Harlem New York, and my public school was in Harlem, also in Hell's Kitchen. Thanks to my sister for giving me the inspiration to write my story. I began writing poetry in 1995 and life was hard, looking back; God has blessed me, and I have seen a lot in my lifetime. I have tried to better my life and tried helping others on the way. I went to Manhattan Bible Institute of New York for about a year. I graduated 1987 as an Evangelist then I moved to Hudson, New York. I joined State Street A.M.E. Zion Church and under the leadership of my Pastor, for about 3 years of studying, I had to travel from Hudson to New York and to other churches for my class. I moved to Poughkeepsie, NY and I joined Smith Metropolitan A.M.E. Zion church, and I was ordain on 6-13-98 under the leadership of my pastor, I learned a lot. I have always dreamed of becoming a writer. This is the first book and poetry and I pray it won't be my last. May God bless you and may it bring you hope.

  • von Marilynne Harrison

Recovery Happens through Christ is taken from the journals of Marilynne Harrison, an otherwise regular person who found herself sexually abused as a child and exposed to a world of sin in such a way as to bring tears to one's eyes. By the time she was eleven, Marilynne was exposed to drugs, alcohol, and sex; and worst of all, was told to keep her situation to herself. The results of being robbed of her childhood led Marilynne to continue to live her life in the only way she knew, by continuing in the same sins. Finally, many years later, Marilynne makes a dramatic turn to God. He lifts her out of her pit in a truly impossible way. This book covers seventeen painful and then triumphant years in Marilynne' s life. She shares her tremendous struggles with sin, painful choices leading to more wrongdoing, and finally, a real call from our ultimate Savior, Jesus Christ. Celebrate her recovery and find hope for your own recovery, or that of your loved ones. Are you struggling with drugs, alcohol, and wrong sexual relationships? Are you trapped in a sex addiction and can't find your way out? Do you long to understand the relationship between the Christian and homosexuality? Is there real hope for gay and lesbian recovery? Do you feel as if there is no possibility for addiction recovery or abuse recovery? Before you lose all hope, find some quiet reading time and read the story of a lady with all the same reoccurring temptations and failures. With all her miserable existence, she provides hope to those who know exactly what she is talking about when she discusses her deplorable and self-destructive lifestyle. Do not give another moment of your life to yourself and Satan. Instead, allow yourself to be guided by the Holy Spirit to the One who also understands your temptations and is able to finally give you relief. Jesus Christ died for you, just as much as He did for Marilynne and the whole world. Just as He rescued Marilynne and gave her new life, He can surely do the same for you too.We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are. For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God's glorious standard ... People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood (Romans 3:22-25)

  • von George Kitchin

Prisoner of the OGPU, first published in 1935, is a firsthand account of the author's 4 years in the Soviet gulag (1928-32) at the hands of the Soviet secret police (known as the OGPU at the time, later renamed the NKVD, MGB, and KGB). At the time of his arrest, George Kitchin, a Finnish citizen, was working in Russia as a representative for an American firm. He was charged with violating an obscure regulation, held in prison, and then sent to a labor camp located in northern Russia where he describes the brutalities he endured and witnessed. The book also offers excellent insights into the running of the camps as Kitchin was able to work in the camp's administration offices (in addition to sometimes being sent to work on the timber-cutting and road-building labor crews). The OGPU was one of several in a succession of state security agencies created by the Soviets. the first group was the Cheka, created by Vladimir Lenin on December 20, 1917. The main task of the Cheka was to combat counter-revolutionary activity, which included arresting, torturing, and executing thousands. Soldiers belonging to the Cheka were tasked with: policing labor camps, running the Gulag system, subjecting political opponents to arrests, detention, torture and execution, and subduing rebellions or riots by the workers or peasants. The Cheka was followed by the GPU, the State Political Directorate, in 1922. The GPU was renamed again in 1923 to the OGPU, the United State Political Administration.

Life was different back in the day. Community was vital. Childhood antics, teenage exploits, and the challenges of young adulthood revealed I didn't know what I thought I knew. Through all of this, the greatest influence of my life was my mom. She helped me process the good and the bad. Instead of being one-dimensional live, love, and laugh with the great intention and anticipation of more. As she is no longer with me her words and laughter linger on, and I am emancipated. I learned that the greatest gift of life was and truly is love; unpretentious, nurtured, and existing to be shared with others.

Art Shay: "In a world obsessed with the aggressive explorations of other countries and cultures, it is sheer delight to recommend a classic internal search: "Savvy Me...(NOT)" a Comedy of Errors and Successes is an entertaining tour through the life of a bouncy country girl who developed her passion for music - especially singing- into the esthetic centerpiece of a normal life, - with, alas, many pitfalls -which she conquers with style and pizzazz.Readers will marvel how, at long last, this empty- nester who had accepted a kind of second-class life at the hands of other people- finds her true self by searching for, finding, then utilizing all her hidden assets- and putting them into play. This is a talented woman's story for women- for women who sense there is more to their lives- if only they could tug at the right threads to undo the tangle of their former days.Judi K somehow manages to inspire in others the feelings she found in herself- and to enrich what she calls her "late in life" overcoming of hardships and obstacles that would have daunted many lesser women.Having produced more than 60 books over the past half century, I'm happy to recommend "Savvy Me (NOT)" - A Comedy of Errors and Successes to as many of my readers as I can. All you wanna-be late achievers- this upbeat book is for you"! Art Shay: Most recent books :"Nelson Algren's Chicago", "Couples", "Animals", "Album for an Age".Scott Yanow: "Judi K is a superior swing and jazz singer who is always a delight to hear. Her memoirs, "Savvy Me"- A Comedy of Errors and Successes", display another valuable skill. She is a colorful storyteller with a strong memory, and she has a memorable story to tell. Her evolution from a young farm girl to a sophisticated singer, and her lifelong battle against her unwillingness to do something for herself as opposed to being a constant caregiver, makes for fascinating reading about universal topics."-Scott Yanow, veteran jazz journalist and author of ten books including The Jazz SingersHarry Mark Petrakis: "From a ride on a tractor, to the building of a house, to living on a farm and the taste of newly plucked apples in an orchard, the memoir is precise and poignant in evoking the smells, sights and sounds of a beloved past." - Harry Mark Petrakis; novelist, short story writer.Shelley Wruk Finke: ""In recent years Judi K has produced sensitive and intelligent profiles of jazz personalities for the Mississippi Rag. Pasta! Vino! Hill Towns! Coins in the Fountain will transport you to Italy where you can find out what it's really like to live the expatriate life. It's all here in the story of a couple who said "NO!" to middle age boredom and made a dash from a small-town in Oregon to cosmopolitan Rome when the author went to work for the United Nations. In between actually working there were Italian weddings to attend, music to be heard, a close-up with the Pope, travel with the wine club and country weekends in Umbria where the Etruscans still seemed to be lurking about. Nights spent "sleeping" on cardboard, a brush with the Italian medical system, an auto accident with the military police, a fall in the subway, interactions with an excitable landlord, and picking grapes at harvest time all became part of their daily adventures. And of course there were many new friends like the countess with her butt-reducing machine and the count who served as a model for statues of naked horsemen.Unexpectedly taking up early retirement, the author's husband met strange vegetables in his valiant efforts to learn to cook Italian-style. When not struggling in the kitchen he played golf on a course where the rough featured snakes and unexploded bombs and crewed on a sailboat he saved from sinking on the way to Greece.Part memoir, part travelogue to off-beat sites in Rome and elsewhere, you will be amused and intrigued with the stories of food, friends and adventures. You, too, will want to run away to join the Circus (the Circus Maximus, that is). And before you depart Rome, you will never forget to throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain to ensure a return to beautiful Rome and enchanting Italy.

Born in Costa Rica, I came to the US not knowing a word of English. Growing up, my home life was full of violence, starting with experiencing my father's abuse of my mother and siblings to witnessing my older siblings' perpetuate the abuse in their relationships, I had no frame of reference for what a loving, caring, and supportive relationship was. I was exposed to adult settings too early, sexualized too young, and put into many situations that I had no idea how to navigate-and that was all before I entered high school. By the time I was a teenager, all I knew was that I wanted to get out of my house and create a better life. But I always fell back on what felt normal comfortable, which was abusive relationship after abusive relationship. Many dark years, excruciating beatings, and five children later, I discovered that the only way to overcome the circumstances surrounding me was to break the cycle that I'd maintained for so long.My recovery became my journey. It was difficult to recover while I continued the same patterns in my life. I had to go back to the very beginning and unpack the initial trauma and how it continued to affect me for so long.
