This lack of unified purpose among the AI community makes this a very exciting time for AI research: new and diverse projects are springing up literally every day.

Alberto Sangiovanni-Vincentelli, my UC Berkeley advisor, had been a consultant at IBM, I re ceived a copy of the original IBM internal report on simulated annealing approximately the day of its release.

Only two decades ago most electronic circuits were designed with a slide-rule, and the designs were verified using breadboard techniques. Today a wide range of tools exist for analYSiS, deSign, and verification, and expert systems and synthesis tools are rapidly emerging.

One of the appendices in the dissertation was an overview of a Prolog implementation of an interpreter based on the AND/OR Process Model, a simulator I used to get some preliminary measurements of parallelism in logic programs.

It has been widely recognized that artificial intelligence computations offer large potential for distributed and parallel processing. Unfortunately, not much is known about designing parallel AI algorithms and efficient, easy-to-use parallel computer architectures for AI applications.

The objective of this dissertation is to advance the state-of-the-art in the kinematic modeling, identification, and control of robotic manipulators with rigid links in an effort to improve robot kinematic performance.

For example, for certain architectures and certain operations, large improvements in performance can be attained by storing a matrix in row major order. A determination must be made whether or not it is the best solution globally to store the matrix in row order, column order, or even have two copies of it, each organized differently.
