Berta ist 17, als sie sich einen >Bubikopf< schneiden lässt - gegen den Willen ihrer Mutter. Dass sie auch noch Mitglied der Sozialistischen Arbeiterjugend wird, führt zu Gegenwind, der ihre Politisierung in der Weimarer Republik jedoch noch bestärkt. Berta Backof (1911-2001) protestiert gegen die Aufrüstung der deutschen Marine, bald tritt sie in die Sozialistische Arbeiterpartei (SAP) ein. Als die Nazis an die Macht kommen, folgt der Schritt in die Illegalität, sie wird - inzwischen in der KPD - Teil des Widerstands. Der Band stützt sich auf zwei ausführliche Interviews, in denen Berta Backof ihre Lebensgeschichte erzählt. Sie schildert ausgefochtene Kämpfe, ihre Verhaftung durch die Nazis oder, für die Zeit nach 1945, ihre Arbeit als kommunistische Funktionärin in einer männlich geprägten Organisation. Auch jenseits der Partei bleibt sie ihr Leben lang politisch bewusst. Noch in den 1990er Jahren läuft sie an der Spitze der 1.-Mai-Demonstration in Nürnberg. Historisch eingebettet, ergibt sich ein lebendiges Bild der Arbeiter:innen- wie auch der Nürnberg-Fürther Lokalgeschichte von den 1920er Jahren bis in die Nachkriegszeit - das Porträt einer Frau, deren Leben über den Tag hinausweist.

Nach außen versucht die chinesische Regierung, die Kommunistische Partei unter Führung von Xi Jinping als monolithischen Block und das Volk als vereint darzustellen. In den letzten Jahren propagieren die offiziellen Medien ein »harmonisches« Ideal der Familie, in der Frauen wieder stärker traditionellen Rollenbildern entsprechen sollen. Von den ethnischen Minderheiten wird erwartet, sich aktiv an die hanchinesische Mehrheitskultur anzupassen. Felix ­Wemheuer hebt hingegen hervor, dass die Volksrepublik China ein geografisch vielfältiges und konfliktreiches multi-ethnisches Land voller gesellschaftlicher Widersprüche, sozialer Kämpfe und intellektueller Auseinandersetzungen ist. Seit vielen Jahren veröffentlicht Wemheuer, heute Professor für Moderne China-­Studien an der Universität Köln, journalistische Artikel, Reisereportagen, Interviews sowie Buchbesprechungen zu Entwicklungen in der Volksrepublik. Nun hat er die noch immer lesenswerten Beiträge ausgewählt und für diese Publi­ka­tion aufs Neue durchgesehen und bearbeitet. Die hier porträtierten Frauen kamen aus mehr als zwanzig europäischen Ländern, aus dem faschistischen Deutschland, aus besetzten und nicht besetzten Regionen. Allesamt widersetzten sie sich der Terrorherrschaft des deutschen ­Faschismus und dem in weiten Teilen des Kontinents tobenden Krieg. Sie beteiligten sich an verschiedensten Aktionen des antifaschistischen Widerstands, auch transnational, übernahmen Verantwortung und waren immer wieder auch unter Waffen im Einsatz. Sie kämpften für Freiheit, Frieden, Menschenwürde und Solidarität, sie riskierten ihr Leben - und trugen zur Befreiung bei. Dabei emanzipierten sich viele auch von traditionellen Geschlechterrollen. Noch immer sind viel zu viele Widerstandskämpferinnen unsichtbar. Anknüpfend an den Band »Mit Mut und List« werden rund 80 weitere Frauen vorgestellt. Wissenschaftlerinnen und Journalistinnen aus ganz Europa tragen dazu bei, ihnen ein Gesicht zu geben und ihre Geschichte zu erzählen, dem Vergessen ein lebendiges Erbe entgegenzusetzen. Diese Frauen ­machen Mut für das heutige Auftreten gegen Neofaschismus, Rechtspopulismus, Rassismus, Sexismus und Krieg.

Das Buch skizziert die humanitären Kriegsfolgen und Verheerungen von Teilen des Landes, um daraufhin die globalen Langzeitfolgen des Krieges in den Blick zu nehmen: so die Hochrüstung mit entsprechender Militarisierung der Gesellschaften; das gegenseitige Misstrauen, das die Mechanismen internationaler Verständigung untergräbt; die Kooperation, die gefordert wäre, um eine ökologische Katastrophe noch abzuwenden.
