Über MPI SCORE - Role In Peforation Peritonitis
Enteric perforation is one of the causes of acute abdomen encountered in the emergency department by surgical residents. The prognosis varies from person to person due to multiple factors. Mannheim Peritonitis Index (MPI score) brings all the crucial factors together and thus aids the surgeons in predicting the outcome following perforation peritonitis. Mannheim peritonitis index was developed by Wacha and Linder in 1937. MPI index appears to be more practical and more reliable means of risk evaluation than other scoring systems, which are time consuming, requiring more blood investigation and may be impossible to apply in clinical setting of intra-abdominal sepsis. This study was done by applying MPI score in patients diagnosed with perforation peritonitis and was found to hold good. This score reminds us of the proverb 'Old is Gold' by its excellent outcome predicting power though being an age old scoring system.
