Personal Narrative of Occurrences during Lord Elgin's Second Embassy to China, 1860

In 1860, Henry Brougham Loch (1827-1900) accompanied the eighth Earl of Elgin on a mission to China, the aim of which was to obtain ratification of the Treaty of Tientsin. His personal observations of events, first published in 1869, include an account of his brutal imprisonment by Chinese officials.
