Über Powdery Scab
Irish potatoes (Solanum-tuberosum) are economically important crops. However potato production is greatly affected by powdery scab caused by spongospora subterranea. Tubers with surface infections such as Powdery-scab or common-scab are less attractive, have a reduced market price and storage life . However skin finish is becoming more important as consumers are increasing demanding potatoes with clean attractive skins. There is lack of an effective chemical method to control powdery-scab. There is great need to control fungal diseases like Powdery-scab to realise the full potential of potatoes . Calcium is a key component of cell walls, helping to build a strong structure and ensuring cell stability. Calcium also improves potato finish and boosts disease tolerance . Calcium strengthens membranes which are one of the points of entry of bacterial and fungal pathogens. This research evaluated the effects of calcium on the development of powdery scab so as to reduce chemical use and improve the aesthetic value of the tuber.
