Sustainability in the Diving Industry

Over the past decade the diving industry has become a more and more important niche market in the tourism sector. The number of certified divers rises steadily but scientific research on sustainability in the diving industry is scarce. The paucity of underwater studies is connected to the relative recency of recreational diving. Therefore this work combines a variety of literature in order to identify opportunities and areas of problem. The first part provides an overview of the dive sector, including the history and the development of dive tourism, definitions and its relation to sustainability. Nowadays sustainability plays a major role in the tourism industry with an increasing number of destinations, businesses and individuals facing social responsibility to become ¿greener¿. This trend also exists in the diving industry and this study will shine a light on the attitude of recreational divers towards sustainability in the region of Dahab, Egypt.
