The Diagnostic Role of Biomarkers in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (O.S.C.C.) is reported in 30% of all cancers in India. The head and neck squamous cell carcinoma grows locally and then spreads to the neck's lymph nodes. The treatment modalities include surgery, i.e., local resection and neck dissection, chemotherapy, radiotherapy or chemo-radiotherapy. Cervical metastasis has been considered one of the most significant prognostic factors in O.S.C.C. Inflammation is a critical component in the pathogenesis and cancer progression. The hematological changes have been suggested to be cornerstone events in tumor growth, advancement, and spread. C-reactive protein (C.R.P.), Neutrophil-Lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and Platelet-Lymphocyte ratio (P.L.R.) are derived from inflammation-induced derangements in blood and can readily reproducible quantified in patients. This prospective study evaluated and correlated the preoperative serum C-reactive protein, neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio and platelet-lymphocyte ratio for cervical metastasis in primary oral squamous cell carcinoma patients.
