THE LEGITIMACY OF POLITICAL POWER IN AFRICAN STATES

The political thought of J.-J. Rousseau has some operative aspects applicable to the context of African states in the grip of chronic socio-political, economic and cultural crises. Rousseau's political philosophy conveys values that can contribute to stabilizing these societies with a view to social cohesion. The general will can be a factor of national integration for African states whose essence is weakened by ethnotribal ideology. Furthermore, respect for the law, civic-mindedness, patriotism, citizenship education and a culture of peace are all values that can promote peaceful coexistence in Africa and elsewhere in the world.
