Agnes Strickland (1796-1874) and her sister Elizabeth collaborated on many biographical projects, including this eight-volume series. Pioneering figures in women's history, they included discussion of domestic matters ignored by earlier historians. Volume 4 (1853) covers Mary Stuart's early reign, up to the birth of her son James VI.
